Interesting if somewhat grim piece by Sid Lowe on Panama in today's Grauniad: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jun/11/violence-tragedy-murder-amilcar-henriquez-panama-football-team

Unrelated: I've been getting stupidly excited for the WC, certainly more so than any self-respecting 34yo should be, and as such I've been canning a lot of Youtube videos of various WC related stuff across the years. For my sins, I came across the music video for Fat Les's 'Vindaloo' today. Jesus Christ! I had completely forgotten how utterly surreal the whole thing is. Genuinely, what on earth was going on there?

The van Persie header was the first 'oh shit' moment of that tournament for me.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44397861

Does he ever go over a score of 2-0 for a win?

This isn't ok if the story is 100% true.

As the posts say, that's FIFA's fault. Fucking cunts. Hypocritical cunts. Won't let teams express independent political ideas under the guise of neutrality but will certainly allow them to be used for their own gain.

We got the closest we could ever possibly get to ripping that turgid organisation apart and sod all happened. Nothing ever will.

I don't know much about football, but I usually pay attention to the World Cup. I still recall Ronaldinho scoring that goal against Seaman...

What are the current England team like? I remember the famous older players, but I'm not familiar with the current squad.

I wouldn't go expecting too much. I give them better odds at not being as dismal as their last showing but world beaters they are not.

I'd be happy with quarter finals with hints at improving for the future, I want to see some nice football at least which there is some potential for.

I feel like Southgate, as inoffensive and bland as he may well be, is actually playing this very well with both the media and in his messaging to the players at this stage.

As an outsider, it definitely feels like quite a different atmosphere surrounding the team from previous WCs (I've lived in England for the last three). It's certainly the first time I've felt an English WC squad is approaching anything close to being likable :)

I hope they do well; realistically, getting out the groups, possibly through the second round and into a quarter-final appearance, would be a very strong outcome, to my mind.

Of course, I'm sure the press will eviscerate them all, murder their families, set their houses on fire, and then come around to piss on their smoldering ashes, the moment they have the temerity to go out.

They should make the quarter finals quite easily, they shouldn't get past that. So it will probably look like we are doing ok and then hit a brick wall at speed.

They should make the quarters and a failure to make it out of the group's should mean a mass sacking.

I know there's a 'england arrogance' about that but we spend millions on this, we have some of the best facilities and our players are among the best trained in the world. If we can't overcome Tunisia, it's a disgrace.

Always one team that implodes... Spain's turn again, after the announcement that the manager will join Real. Some whispers that he'll step down this morning...

England should qualify out of the group but the position at which they do will be key - if they come second, they could play Colombia in the second round, who are very good and I can see them beating England.

Absolute insanity if this happens. Who on earth was advising on when that announcement was made public? Madness

I don't know how the Spaniards roll, but I would be livid if a manyoo nicked the England manager on the eve of a world cup.

Isn't that kinda what they did with the Netherlands manager before the 2014 World Cup?

@Graxlar_v3 Undoubtedly, but surely you just conclude the negotiations and delay the announcement until after the WC? It's not like an early notification of this guy in particular is going to be essential to Real's Summer purchasing targets, is it?

Just seems so stupid: regardless if he stays or not now for WC, there is going to be a fuck ton of acrimony and the fall out will be massive (unless, bizarrely, they win the thing, I guess).

Also, agree with Nick: non-Real supporting Spaniards are likely to be furious lol

Weird announcement about the Spain manager. I fancied them to reach the semis at least, now I'm not so sure.

Aren't Brazil or Germany likely to be standing in England's way if we somehow made it to the quarters? Yeah, no chance against either team.

For some reason Brazil are being really hyped this time. Saw one fan in the papers declare this squad better than the 1982 one. Uhh, really?

In all seriousness though, they'll probably go on and win it now for no apparent reason. Football.
