Chuckled at this on the Guardian live feed:

'This is an astonishing development, just 29 hours before the start of the World Cup. To compound matters, it sounds like the players were strongly against the move. But the former Hamilton Academical defender Luis Rubiales, now Spanish FA president, was not for turning'.

Hamilton Accies getting name dropped! Scottish influence alive and well at the WC lads, never fear.

    Send out the fat signal.

Big Sam knocking England out in the semi's would be too funny.

USA, Canada and Mexico win the bid for WC 2026. So that's twice the USA will have held it since England did. Seems legit.

Does that mean all 3 teams will auto-qualify? That's also pretty lame.

80 matches in 2026. Good luck to anyone who tries to watch every one.

Somehow the Spanish FA are being painted as the villain here, rather than Real and the manager for negotiating in secret and announcing at this time. Weird bias.

Watching Brazil Germany from 2014 over my lunch. Fernandinho looks a completely different player to what you see every saturday in the league. Dreadful in this game. Brazil are even worse than I remember (and Germany even better. Their teamwork is inspiring). Astonishing game.

@Jyzzy-Z One of the best matches I've ever seen, after kicking Colombia out of the tournament it was wonderful to see them get eviscerated. Apparently Low told the players to take it easy once it started getting ridiculous and not turn it into a humiliation, but even after taking their foot off the gas they did it anyway. Hilarious.

The German players don't seem to have got that message. Absolutely ruthless.

I think I could get 11 lads from the office and come out with a respectable scoreline against this Brazil team. Shite.

    48 teams!

Both the Euros and WC will never be the same after the expansions. The 16 and 32 team formats were perfect as they were.

Not sure i would, international football management isn't a real job its more of a side show. Would totally understand someone wanting to line up a job for after the tournament, especially one as high profile as real

Plenty of managers have gone on to a club after a big International tournament, with some known well in advance. From the sounds of it a few non-Real players got wind of it and they've basically had to announce it before it got leaked, causing a massive cluster fuck. Were probably waiting until after the tournament originally.

Agreed. Rubbish idea that has nothing to do with making better tournaments.

You do wonder how much the current political climate in Spain, in relation to the Catalan independence issue, has played into this, especially given what's been revealed before about the rather rigid polarization within the the national team between the Real and Barca players.

That being said, I've not actually looked at their full 23: how many are from the big two?

As always with FIFA/UEFA it's all about the money.
The continue to ruin football year after year, making and stealing more and more money.

Doesn't it need to be 64 for the tournament to work properly or are they doing best losers from some groups?

Pretty excited for tomorrow now. I hope Russia get fucking pumped every game and go out bottom of the group.

A month of footy through the summer. Fucking magic.

Probably something like that. Depends on whether they'll add another knockout round, which to me would make more sense than all this best third-place teams nonsense.

They're splitting 48 teams into groups of 3, then top 2 go through. Knockout stages I think from last 32 on. Then there's been some insanity floated about every group game having to end in a positive result, so straight to penalties if it ends in a draw at full time, but that's never been confirmed. Basically all just an excuse for Fifa to earn an extra ~$1 billion in revenue.

Portugal winning the Euros still bothers me, seeing as they finished 3rd in their group, but some 3rd placed teams went home. But then I'm a traditionalist, 16/32 teams or bust.
