GameCube mods

I'm fed up with waiting for Freeloader, and I'm not monied enough to buy a US GameCube to go with my PAL one. What's my next best option?
  • Deleted user 27 November 2002 13:56:27
March is my birthday, I could very easily work this to my advantage, but I am not a patient man.

And anyway, how did you know this was about Metroid Prime? :)

    Heh, are you left-handed too?

Some sort of useful reply, gosh! Thanks. I saw somewhere once a place that would let you part-exchange your PAL cube for a modded US one, so you could play Jap imports too. Wonder if I can find that again.

On the 21st Datel updated the Freeloader page and it now says it will be out, hopefully, before christmas. Apparently its finished - just some production difficulties. They also say all XBox development was halted to get FreeLoader finished.

BTW mouse there appears to be a price typo on the Spyro review.

Spotted, ta. Unfortunately I don't have access to the system to change it, and everybody else is nowhere to be seen. It's not like someone's going to buy it off the back of a 5/10 anyway :)

On the other hand, haven't they been saying that for about six months now?

Mouse, the USA/JAP mod is relatively easy to do, they were just jumpers inside which you could solder a switch to!

However, I haven't seen a similar hardware mod for the PAL consoles. I should think its possible but 'freeloader' has delayed anybody bothering to make a concerted effort to find out.

If I find anything, I'll let you know, cos I'd like to get mine done too.

I'm usually well up with AHEM the murkier side of console gaming, but the PAL cube has no modifications available to the best of my knowledge.

There's no real interest to mod it as backup play is almost impossible, and Datel looked to have the region thing nailed on the head 6 months ago. I'm sure it could be done easily but with Datel MOMENTS away from releasing the freeloader is it worth it for someone to start developing it?

    Nope.

You can however get a US cube really cheap from Goblin and other places, but with the freeloader ALMOST here do you really want to spend that £100+ for another console when you have a perfectly servicable one with a few games already?

Depends how much of a Metroid fetish you have. And Zelda is out soon also.

I know that, I'm just impatient. Everyone seems to like it, and I want a piece of the action. I suppose I'll just have to go to Tom's to play it :)

re XBox freeloader equivalent. I looked a few months ago for one and I couldn't find any. All the mods I've seen need the hardware modified in some way.

You can get platinum US GameCubes from goblindirect.com, almost compensates the extra expenditure if you are that desperate.

One of the features that the mod chips always quote is that they disable the reboot by pressing eject on the xbox, so without it being modded, there seems to be no possible way to do a disk swap thing.

    Dang Dang and double dang.

Cheers for that eviltobz at last and explanation...for why not.

Still won't be modding my xbox though.

modding an xbox can stop xbox live service.... it checks if there is one and if it finds one bans your IP. Even if you have a switchable one you know your going to forget once.

more worrying than that, there is the likelyhood of them downloading something to your box that would detect the mod whilst offline, and uploading details about the mod even if its disabled whilst you're connected

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the approach they have taken eviltobz it certainly would make sense for them to do it that way, considering the lengths and amount of effort themselves Sony and Nintendo are going to in trying to eradicate modding.

fortunately i'm more interested in modding it for multi region, development and all that than using live anyway. had adsl for a year and never played any pc games online, so i'm unlikely to start now :)

    edit - typo

It's such a pity the Publishers had to put the foot down when it came to multi-region for xbox.
Originally the xbox was not meant to be region locked but the Publishers had big problems with that.
The live games so far are not region locked. We will be having more of that thank you sir.

If they had kept it as originally planned then there would be absolutely no reason for modding.

Yeah, definitely shooting themselves in the foot as far as banning mod chips because of piracy (big up to the ozzie courts) but especially with the introduction of the hard drive, it becomes an attractive platform for the development community with the linux team, xbox media player etc. If MS had been a bit more open in letting the users do what they want with the box then mods could have no claim other than breaking copy protection, hence it would be an obviously illegal thing to own or produce.

Problem with this is that MS would not make any money on it so TBH why should they allow it...

They could sell cut down versions of the XDK like Sony did with the Yaroze, and as you were saying earlier, if a mod chip gives a user nothing but the ability to pirate games, then it is a pretty simple case to get the chips banned, but if they have legitimate legal uses then they will have a much harder time as the recent case in Australia showed. Still, its all academic now, its out there and its chip-able for good or bad.

Zen Buddhism. Practice the art of patience, young mouse. March may seem a long way away, but reflect upon the wheel of life and before you know it you too will be donning a preposterously large suit of armour.

Agreed, I don't reeeally understand the huge rush to have a game NOW THIS MINUTE. I mean, it'll be just as good in a few months' time.
