I think my top 5 still looks more or less how I thought it would on the first page of this thread:

    1) Persona 5 Royal
    2) Demon's Souls Remastered
    3) Doom Eternal
    4) Wasteland 3
    5) Flight Simulator 2020

Honourable mentions for Ghost of Tsushima, 13 Sentinels, Monster Train, Hellpoint and Sakura Wars. Not sure how Cyberpunk fits in - I'm 30 hours into it and still can't quite settle on how I feel about it. In other categories:

Nice Surprise of the Year: Ghost of Tsushima. Hadn't been following it at all pre-release so went into it with no expectations. It's good.

Disappointment of the Year: Toss-up between Doom Eternal (great, but not as good as Doom 2016) and the FF7 Remake (loved the story, got bored to tears by the combat).

Under-rated Game of the Year: Hellpoint. Got next to no publicity and had a lot of rough edges, so I understand why people bounced off it. But quite rewarding if you persevere.

Over-rated Game of the Year: Toss up between TLoU2 (it's ok, but other than the visuals, it's nothing special) and Hades (some people love it, but it left me cold).

Soundtrack of the Year: Dead heat between Persona 5 Royal and Wasteland 3.

Turd of the Year: Dirt 5. Dishonourable mention for Bugsnax.

Flight sim, mostly because I was in the alpha/beta all year so lost a lot of hours in it while stuck at home.

Old game is iracing, also started that in March and spent most time on that.

I enjoyed Hades but it's been a poor year if it's GOTY.

@bone-on I'd say it's been a poor year in general compared to the last few. Lots of games that just weren't as good as I'd been hoping. Mind you, console generation transition years are usually fairly feeble and this one also had a pandemic shitting up development since March or so.

I guess I can't pick Total Warhammer 2, but it's definitely my own GOTY (again). They keep churning out high quality updates, and the game has such depth and variety now that I just keep coming back. Played a bit last night, glanced at the clock and oh fuck, it's 4.30am. Surely the mark of a great game.

@OnlyJoeKing Yeah, TW:W2 is great. I keep meaning to go back to it to try some of the DLC they've added since I last played. My last playthrough was as the Vampire Coast faction, when they were added.

Three Kingdoms was a big letdown by comparison. It launched in a much rougher state than Warhammer 2 and has some pretty fundamental design and balance problems. I enjoyed my first successful campaign, but by the mid-point of my second one, I couldn't overlook how much was just a bit poor.

Honourable mention for Astro's Playroom. Man, that thing is just a delight. Plays like a dream, and is total nostalgia porn. Really cheered me up a few times when I was feeling a bit shit. Such a pleasure finding the little artifacts, rendered so lovingly. A banger.

@Rogueywon Yeah, they're a bit of a victim of their own success there! I suppose I'm somewhat into Total War now, but the other games just look bland in comparison. I own nearly all the DLC for TW:W2 now, bar the Beastmen, and I've got my money's worth for sure.

Heh, all 3 variations of "they're/their/there" in a 12 word sentence..

@OnlyJoeKing I did a co-op playthrough of Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai earlier this year and that's great. You can see them playing around with a few mechanics and ideas that would later show up in the Warhammer games.

Still waiting for news on Warhammer 3. It's apparently still in the works, but there's been total radio silence on it for a long time now.

I 100% agree mate but for such an unmemorable game to get GOTY it just highlights how bad it's been. I'm not by any stretch saying Hades isn't good but no way is it GOTY material.

Absolutely. It'd have been in my top 5, maybe top 3 if it were a bit longer. It was an absolute joy to play.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is a clear winner for me. (And yes a remake of a 10 year old Wii game is my number 1).

    With honourable mentions to:
    Last of Us: Part 2
    Demonís Souls
    FFVII Remake
    3D Mario Allstars
(And only 1 of those is completely new).

Canít remember what I played this year :| haha.

I think the game that as stuck with me most is Lonely Downhill Mountain. It nailed the feel of mountain biking (skids! Free hub! Birds! Breaking your face!) backed up with a compulsive game chasing fast times or just simply ambling down a massive canyons and ravines. Must check out the dlc at some point.

I've just realised that I don't think I played a single game that actually came out this year. Aside from Mario 3D All Stars, but obviously that doesn't really count.

Anyway, my game of the year was Outer Wilds. A year too late perhaps, but a unique and sublime game nonetheless.

    TLOU2, nothing else came close.

I enjoyed the FF7 remake too, quite excited to see where that goes.

I only picked this up this year and am delaying finishing it... what a game.

Its given me so many philosophical thoughts I really don't want to finish it, no self-sacrifice arrives without value, each one accompanied with another minor epiphany to inform my travels for the next time loop. I'm really eeking it out. I feel like I'll never find another game like it.

Despite gaming more this year on account of the pandemic than in most previous years, I haven't actually finished that many games.

I think Streets of Rage 4 would have to by my GOTY 2020. It was just absolutely fucking fantastic. You could tell it was a true labour of love by the dev team. Amazing game and I still regularly listen to the soundtrack.

@Dgzter Wasn't SoR4 also the game that triggered Fuzzy's final meltdown? Or am I getting mixed up?

PS5 launch has knocked THPS 1+2 off top spot for me now. I'd probably go:

    1) Miles Morales
    2) Astro's Playroom
    3) Demon's Souls

Ghost of Tsushima on PS5 would almost certainly be fighting for top spot if I'd had the time to plow into it too. One for Jan without a doubt.

Haha, yeah that's right. He started out loving it then hit a difficult section, which precipitated a full on rant about the dev team, their lack of vision, understanding, and competence, and our (fellow EGers at the time enjoying the title) complicity in the continual degradation of gaming standards.

    Good times!

My top 3 for games Iíve finished are:

    1) Demons Souls
    2) Ghost of Tsushima
    3) Doom Eternal

However, Iím currently playing Hades and Iím fairly confident it can (will) replace one of those three games, just not sure which one at this point.

Honourable mentions goes to TloU2, which is excellent but preferred the others more and Sackboy, which is nothing short of joyous, especially in co-op.

Hades was my GOTY of games released this year.

Bloodborne was my favourite/most played game (finally completed and platted it)

    GOTY for me was

    13 Sentinels Aegis Rim

Then it's between Streets of Rage 4 or Gran Blue Versus

@bone-on I'm about 12 hours into Aegis Rim and it does seem very special. Like Super Robot Wars and Evangelion had a baby, but threw a bit of Stein's;Gate into the mix.

I must say though if 2020 will be remembered for one thing its that there wasn't enough love for Streets of Rage 4.

    SOR4 stomps all over Hades.

I'm ashamed that I forgot about SoR4. Pure gaming bliss.

For me GOTY is MSFS2020, just an amazing achievement.

Cyberpunk might not deserve it because of the state it's in, but on PC the game world is so easy to get lost in (until you hit the next glitch).

Assetto Corsa Competizione is ace if you're in the market for a proper sim racer.

I punched two bad guys in the face in SOR4 and just moved on... Feeling regret now!
