Any game you have currently on the go that you dip in and out of is fine and doesn't need to fill a slot. It is games that you start (either newly bought or from the backlog) once the Challenge officially begins (soon) that would then fill a slot until completed or played to a satisfactory conclusion that is justifiable to other challengers (pigwhippers).
How do the rules relate to ongoing games? Stuff like Destiny and FIFA that I continually dip in and out of, would they take up a slot each?
Same applys to old games you have previously beaten that you fire up again for old times sake. No slot used there...HOWEVER, if you buy a new version of that old game, for example a game you bought on an old console that gets re-released on a new console which you then buy again - that would go in a slot as you would have to justify the second purchase, rather than just dump it in the backlog.
Some might choose to put games they have on the go now into the slots, to give themselves the mental discipline to see them through, but it is not mandatory. Once again, only games you buy or start playing once the Challenge starts HAVE to go on. -

Registered 18 years agoSign me up. I've never done this, partly as I don't think I have a huge problem? Tend to only play one or two games at any one time. Orrrr... Am I actually hugely in denial. I have over 900 games on Steam so maybe the latter... That is mostly from bundle spaffing which I don't tend to do anymore. -

Registered 18 years agoIn fact how does Bundle buying work? Say there is actually a decent Humble Bundle, which happens occasionally now, that's 12 games bought? -

This is why I'm here. There's a difference between enjoying your toys and consumertainment, indulging in sales and just spaffing money up the wall needlessly.

Count me in excess cash and little time and zero will power means I have over 75 games unfinished
And yet I still buy them
Take me back to my childhood where I got 3-4 games a year and cherished them good or bad -

A bundle or game compilation will fill a single slot and remain there until you had completed/suitably spent enough time with the main games that interested you in the bundle. The rest of the filler games that you weren't interested in just get dumped into backlog and only count once you have played them for 2 hours.

The 2 hour free time allows for backlog 'sampling' as part of the careful choosing of your next proper game. Newly bought games (or bundles) go straight into a slot however, no 2 hr window there. -

Registered 13 years agoI'll try this. I'm halfway through about 3 games so this will be good incentive to stick with them and free up some more slots. -

Registered 7 years agoI would live to see a stat which shows the number of games released on all formats over the years. I bet it's shot up drastically since the 16 bit era.
It feels like there is so much stuff released now it's impossible to play everything and I start to suffer from fomo.
I remember when I had a megadrive and my mate had a SNES between us we managed to play most games on those formats by renting from the vid shop and swapping with mates.
Now you have to pick your games carefully or you just end up feeling overwhelmed by the size of your backlog. Gaming is supposed to be fun but over the last 5yrs it's felt like a chore and a slog to just keep up.
Most games now tend to be over 15hrs in length whereas the 8bit 16bit era had games with much smaller run times which meant you could complete what you bought. When I read about 100+ hrs invested in games like Assassin's Creed you have to think something is very wrong.

I really need to be careful of my purchases. -

Time to get tough with yourself. You can't play all four systems at once, so have maybe two or three on the go with one space for flexibility. Either that, or go down in flames with all your hopes and dreams of bringing your game buying under control.

I would say that even compared to the PS3/Xbox 360 era, the number of games released has massively increased due to all the indies. I think you would have to go back as far as the second generation of consoles to see such an excess of games. There was so much poor crap released in that generation that it was impossible to find the good from the bad (hence the US video game crash). I don't think we have descended to that quagmire of shiteness, but part of it has to be due to the much higher number of potential players now to keep it all afloat. Metacritic, while not exactly the best of sites before, has become fairly useless now as such a high proportion of games don't get reviewed and hence only the big games get any kind of representation there.
I don't think there are any less good games than before (possibly more?), but there are definitely more poor or very average games coming out. -

Registered 17 years agoI’m definitely back in for this year. Although a massive failure the last few times out, I’m still a vastly improved purchaser and player of games. Day one is largely meaningless for me now, I don’t get sucked in during sales and the like, and I really do try to eke maximum pleasure from the good games I find.
Your notion of a list is a good one, Murbs, even if only to have something to compare the new shiny with. For example I’m still tempted by Ass Creed Valhalla bit Fenyx also looks fun. And I never even played Odyssey. Which one makes the list? Meta Pig Whipping..gif)

I don't even know what I play to buy this year as I've not really looked at new stuff on the horizon. If however, D4 drops this year then I'm in, day 1. No questions. -

Registered 9 years agoI don’t entirely buy into the we had less money so we played our games to get everything out of them. I made more informed purchases. But a C90 tape, twin cassette player and I still had access to games I wanted to try.
Having said that, a stone cold classic was played at the expense of other titles. I lost so much time to Elite and getting lost in the Hobbit. -
