Hilariously I don't think you're wrong.
Having watched some more reviews I think I get what people wanted from this.
An open world, tightly scripted, puzzle focused, narrative driven, non-linear survival horror, sub-dom sim, that wasn’t more of the same but also wasn’t different either -

Registered 16 years agoI wonder if the pre-release marketing was a problem for this one. It very heavily emphasised the Lady Dimetrescu stuff, which is only a relatively small part of the game. That might not have been the original marketing plan, but when it took off like it did, Capcom leaned into it hard.
That resulted in a lot of very excited games journalists and influcunts and quite a lot of... erm... over-sharing. Had the game been pushed as more of a "Resi Ensemble", some of the reviewers may have come to it with a more open mind. -

Registered 8 years agoOf course they'd lean into her, there's obviously a lot of horny people out there as the internet's obsession has shown. Capcom saw a way for free marketing and ran with it. Honestly I get the feeling for some people Resi 7 was their first introduction to the series proper and thus have a fixed idea what it should be, I doubt many of them have even played or heard of something like Code Veronica and aren't aware how Resi isn't really some fixed idea. The use of the stalker mechanic through Resi 7 to Resi 3 remake has probably influenced how they view the series as a whole. If you looked at it since the original Resi 2 the horror aspect was pushed first then always moved into pure action. -

Registered 15 years agoI’m forever complaining that the trailers for games and movies show too much, so I was really pleased how much more there was to the game compared to what was shown. -

Registered 12 years agoSee I'd be inclined to sort of understand the Resident Evil 7 thing, if that game's second half wasn't a bit of a clusterfuck of action-heavy nonsense itself.
I just think we've reached a point in time where there's a generation of players that have a romantic notion of what the series is (probably not helped by the likes of RE2 Remake) without ever really experiencing some of it first hand. The series has a long tradition of having a very similar structure which RE8 follows. It's always been more action heavy and frantic in the third act when the curtain has been pulled back. -

Registered 16 years agoMight be nice if we could have an actual, new Silent Hill, that could be what RE isn't so that RE can get on with being RE.
Though that would require Konami to make games not pachinko, so not happening any time soon. -

Ahem.
Like something similar to A New Nightmare, but actually good or something.
Or bloody Eternal Darkness. -

I kinda hope they are just giving it a bit of a hiatus to get the stink of their later efforts away from it.

Registered 15 years agoDead Space 1 & 2 are two of my all time favourite games.
I never touched 3 due because of the bad press it got, and also because I think co-op is an awful thing to put into horror. -

Registered 11 years agoIt's a big shame the studio closed. I think you can still play them on Xbox gamepass backwards compatibility, but I think that's the only way now. Unless you've still got the original disks and a PS3.
I really want to play 1 and 2 now as well. Tits. -

Registered 12 years agoI've been thinking about Dead Space a lot recently and I doubt we'll ever see a remake. The EA that published the first game is long, long gone. Look at how their attitude to the series changed by the third installment because they wanted it to have more mass-appeal.
As much as I hate to admit it, there's absolutely zero chance of a new Eternal Darkness release, either. Except for maybe an untouched port of the GC original down the line at some point. -

Registered 8 years agoI replayed dead space 1 and 2 a few months back. 1 is awesome, 2 is a decent action game. 1 is where its at though.
I'm one of the 3 apologists though, I loved it and I started it but got sidetracked. -

Registered 6 years agoI didn’t finish 3. I thought it was fine. Dead Space was never a particularly psychological series in its horror but it did drift almost closer to Doom 3’s horror themed shooter gameplay than anything else. Not necessarily a bad experience but you become desensitised to the monsters pretty quickly. -

Haha, no worries. Yes, the horror and tension still adds up doesn't it. I have to force myself to play them depending on my mindset at the time.

Registered 8 years agoNot one to really bash EG reviews but i can’t believe they gave the first one a 7/10. Bona-foda classic for me. Would love a new entry or even just a remaster of the first.
Can take or leave the other two (two was great, three was pants) but yeah, sad to see the series drift into obscurity -

Yeah but it's EG. They did an article years after saying how it was a groundbreaking game. They are if anything inconsistent when it comes to reviews. I mean I remember Street Fighter 5 getting an essential at release because Wesley likes Street Fighter disregarding that it had next to no content. I don't really take any stock in their reviews as for a few of them it's not a review but some essay about an unconnected thing and you never really get an indication of what the game is like.
