Registered 15 years agoConnections - First episode helped me prepare for the collapse of civilisation - learn how to use a plough, plus loads of other brilliant insights into how the world evolved tech, etc through various 'connections'
I remembered it from the 80s on BBC, but recently bought DVD box set and not disappointed.
edit - Rating 90/100 - Also has one of THE greatest one-shot to camera scenes!

Registered 2 years agoAscent of Man. Prof Bronowski pretty much died as a result of making it (as I understand it) but I bet he would think it was worth it, making something that will stand for all time
World at War, narrated by Olivier. So good because of the interviews, from Blitz battling cockneys reminiscing round a pub table, to Speer and Doenitz
History of Britain with Simon Schama
7-up, and all the follow ups. Michael Apted died recently, but no one noticed
Pretty much everything by Ken Burns, but particularly Vietnam, which has the same greatness as World at War - interviews with people who were there.
100/100 for all of those, do what they do perfectly.

Registered 14 years agoYeah Ken Burns is great. There's a channel on Freeview, PBS America which screens some of his epics. I recently watched Jazz and The Dust Bowl.
That's 2 separate works by the way... -

The Civil War by Ken Burns is a classic too. -

I've not watched it in ages actually, might be due a rewatch...

Registered 10 years ago@muddyyfunster I saw that at the Vancouver Film Festival back in 2005 on a whim - it was brilliant! Good Q&A with the makers afterwards too. I haven’t seen it or seen anyone mention it since then, so glad it didn’t just disappear into vapour. -

Anvil: The Story of Anvil
The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley
The Parrots of Telegraph Hill
The Vow
Catfish (The original film - and yes, very divisive as to whether it’s a non-scripted documentary or not, but I’ll throw it in there anyway)
Various Louis Theroux episodes (twilight of the pornstars and pro wrestling probably my favourite)
And goes without saying but all the Planet Earth and Blue Planet series. -

Registered 18 years agoRarely post these days, but I'm a doc junky, so thought I'd contribute.
So many outstanding docs, lots mentioned above. I'm obsessed with what I call 'witnessing history' docs, the ones where it feels like the sheer fluke of being in the right place at the right time with a camera leads to documenting something extraordinary. This would include films like... Icarus or series like The Jinx. But the one that to this day makes me question whether they were actually time travellers, is the Naudet Brothers documentary on 9/11 I am always amazed how few people have seen it and yet it has everything. The human story of two brothers separated by this tragedy, the footage, the access, the sheer fluke that they were making a doc about new firemen recruits when this happened. It's powerful stuff that captures something so iconic.
Anyway. That's my recommendation.
