    Bioshock was definitely a highlight.
This gets my vote. I remember wondering why the cut scene and just kind of lingered on screen, without progressing... then I nudged the left stick and it was a serious "Holy crap, this isn't the cut scene anymore, this is the game". Then that bathysphere journey down into Rapture. Oh. My. God. Truly one of the best games ever made.

There's been a kidnapping! It's Rachel, the daughter of the president of Serbia! Get into the castle and rescue Rachel!

Sometime, somewhere, someone is plotting a government overthrow. A small Republic is in danger. It's time for the one man army.

What, a train commute is the best intro now?

And Road Rash on PS1/3DO was pretty awesome, thanks to the Soundgarden track roaring alongside the action.

    Terrible game though.
Dude wtf that game was epic

Corny as hell, but Command & Conquer: Red Alert's intro is also good fun, especially once the soundtrack kicks in.

    Edit: also, features bonus Hitler.

For me it's a bunch of Ultima series games.

U6 for that unbelievably dramatic opening, U7:SI for that awesome bait and switch, U8 for best Guardian, U:UW2 for sense of mystery. Oh, and honourable mention goes to Worlds of Ultima: Martian Dreams for best Jules Verne.

The intro to Another World, when you had no idea what you were about see and no idea that anything like that was possible.

Yeah Another World intro was extraordinary. Found it terrifying at the time.

Or maybe I'm thinking of Fade to Black... One of them had a black dog demon thing that looking terrifying in the cut scene and then chased you.

That's still Another World, the first bit after you take over control.

Did anybody ever actually enjoy fade to black? Even at the time it seemed a bit shit.

I'm tempted to play through one of the many remastered or original versions of Flashback that I have, but F2B can just fuck right off!

SNES Flashback is definitely my nomination for the thread

Half Life or Bioshock are probably the best for me. Maybe FF7.

Resident Evil 1 is a great opener, although verrrrry cheesy. But was also terrifying

Mass Effect 2, so cinematic, helped I was jonesing for that game.

Similar with Skyrim, on first bootup I sat through all of the music didn't even start the game for 10 mins, epic score

I-War. 1997 PC game, pretty good game but the intro was amazing, well worth a watch.

I enjoyed it at the time but its graphics looked dated even on launch when stuff like Resident Evil 1 were coming out around it. It was pretty clunky to play in the pre-analogue stick PS1 controller era too.

I can see myself going back to Another World or Flashback but Fade to Black would need a ground up remake to compete even for nostalgia plays.

The Resi 2 FMV was incredible at the time.

Man, one decade before that was 1988 and the NES and Master System reigned. Tech used to move so fast

the recording of the song is different, and worse, than the one on the soundtrack cd but whatever, it's still by far the best game intro of all time.

If you're talking intro videos as well, I'd recommend Left 4 Dead's. It's masterfully done really, introduces everything succinctly and sets you up for what's to come. That whole game is a design masterclass.

Less an intro and more an opening level, but Prey (2017) has an absolutely superb first half hour.

This is the only answer we need. Even the setup window suggested the full 120MB installation just so you could watch the intro.
