    Hey, anyone else playing Valheim, the new Viking survival game?

    Haven't enjoyed a survival game since Subnautica and usually stay clear of Early Access but I have to say it seems promising, not too chore like and fussy but deceptively deep and a nice trickle of progression.

    Love the house building and art style too.

    Iíve built a little shack in meadows with a bed and a few storage crates for items. Going to work on upgrade to my gear next and then take on the boss. Fortunately my base is on the border to the Black Forest and the first boss is a tiny walk away. Iím not building a decent base in meadows yet. Iíll explore and find the perfect home soon. Really enjoying it.

    It's probably the best EA game I've played since The Forest and the art style is sublime. I am around 10hrs now and just enjoy building and pottering around. The combat isn't the greatest and I bloody wish building would auto level with the ground.

    Been hearing great things. You guys playing solo? My Steam mates don't have it so am reluctant to jump in as it seems to be Better With Friendsô...but it seems kinda good.

    Playing solo here and I think the only problem is once you unlock Ore which is pretty heavy to transport and obviously easier with others.

    Yep playing solo, doing fine at the moment. Really solid game so far.

    The bees are happy.

    This is going to destroy my spare time. It's so good already.

    Same. I have spent 20hrs just building my initial base which is close to being finished now.

    Huh, this now comes recommended by the other gaming site I read, too. Not my thing, but I just might take a punt.

    Only had a very quick look so far, hoping to put some more time in this weekend. Picking things up seems a bit odd though, you have to press the key once to "hit" the item, then a second time to pick it up. Feels a bit odd, guess I'll get used to it.

    It is basically Terraria in 3D but with vikings.

    Are the huge pixel textures supposed to be there or is this a bug on my machine?

    Well, everything has to have a touch of minecraft these days, otherwise kids won't look at it twice. Also, less work for graphic artists.

    I love the graphic style as it has that old school WoW look going on. The environments are generally quite stunning at times espeically once you get your base or village sorted.

    @dominalien I think itís part of the style. Although mine was shockingly bad to start with. Checked in the options and it wasnít even set to 1080p! Looks a lot better after changing that.

    This is really good. I've just sunk four hours into it this evening, playing solo. The controls are great - very satisfying even just building a house with a limited set of items. The environment is gorgeous. It's almost an illusion in how it's simultaneously naff looking, but also a really lovely art style.

    Feel like I've barely scratched the surface. Reminds me of Animal Crossing in these early moments. Not very taxing, but pleasing building your little hideaway.

    A group of online folks I vaguely know has even set up a dedicated server for it, so I'm going to jump in with them once I'm a little more familiar with the combat and such.

    I had no idea what the game even was a few days ago - what a pleasant surprise.

    Music is wonderful too. Lovely, calming classical pieces. Albeit it gets a fair bit more sinister once night falls...

    It's got loads of nice little details, I wondered why I kept choking and losing health in my hut. Turns out you need a chimney.

    Other things like structural integrity in buildings. Proper (to a point) sailing as well, you have to tack with the wind and at one point the wind died and I had to wait it out.

    It's really captured that alone in the wilderness feel that Minecraft did quite well but does it better.

    Moved up to Bronze tech now, running around with my little cart trying to stay alive at my small farm.

    Yeah, I felt quite smug when I made my first chimney. Like I'd cheated the game somehow, because it doesn't actually tell you to make one, but just organically worked.

    I found out the hard way that trees can kill you when they fall on you... Beware.

    Yep, I like this a lot. Spent the last couple of hours wandering around, then I found an abandoned clifftop house and moved in (after evicting some bees). Now I have a place to sleep, I'm happily going around stocking up on food and trying to figure out how to make a better axe.

    I found the tutorial a bit lacking, though. You've got the crow thing popping up, but he never seems to be reliably easy to find. And after I built my bed he seems to have disappeared altogether.

    I liked the way 7 days to die did it, where each tutorial bit was like a quest to do. Here it just feels a bit aimless.

    This or the forest? that's currently on sale. haven't played many survival games so not sure what's considered the best.

    @Mola_Ram

    Yeah I agree. The bird thing isn't particularly helpful. But then it's all so intuitively designed it doesn't really matter.

    The only thing that really puzzled me was how to repair tools. I kept making new ones and then discovered through a friend the little hammer button when in the workbench menu.

    @Gregolution

    Never played The Forest, but this is very much the rage right now so I'd say this anyway. It's always nice being aboard the hype train for a good game.

    Is it better to wait for proper release or is it almost there?
