I havent even done boss #2 - I am building up my bronze armour as I hear there is a difficulty spike. I have spent over 12 hours on this game today/yesterday. This game is like crack.

Tough game to get into. Not sure if I want to wait for the finished product

The bronze grind is killer. I am just going to stick with the axe and a couple of select bits of armour then move on. Sometimes the game feels a little like work ☺️

Can always use console codes or creative mode.

The thing I find with a lot of survival games is that, once I can basically survive and be self-sufficient, I lose interest very rapidly. I see people building all these amazing structures, but I just cannot be arsed to do that kind of stuff.

It's probably similar to the reason why I lose interest in Civ games past a certain point.

It's the copper, once you get a cart/boat/portals it's a piece of cake. I think I may have just got lucky with my seed, I had multiple copper veins just inside the black forest so it didn't take much to knock up a few mining camps.

I also have the same feeling. I'm not interested in building things for the sake of it, but I was hoping in this one the drive to kill all the bosses is the game which sounds good. I'm not going to spend days building some multi level viking mega hut just for lolz.

I don't think there is self sufficient in this until the very end (which is probably where you are seeing these big minecraft like builds).

It's a lot more traditional game than survival game. Most of the survival systems are really upgrade paths e.g. food, on the way to kill all the bosses which is why it works so well.

I found the copper/tin runs quite fun - me and my little cart bouncing along the shore discovering new areas and hunkering down in delapidated towers as a storm rages outside.

I have managed to take down a couple of ogres outside but am nervious about the caves as it's really confined. Can you really deflect a blow from a tree he is wielding with shield? I normally just kite the fucker and pummel them with arrows.

@Gregolution I think that's the beauty of it - wanna build a palace? go ahead - Want to level up and defeat the bosses? Fill ya boots - wanna go exploring by land or sea? Yup. I think it's a game which will appeal to wide range of people.

Up until Trolls start spawning inside your base because you built close to the Black Forest hehe.

@captbirdseye Oh one of my bases is next the black forest. I put a moat around it with spikes as a welcoming present which is quite the comedy. But spawning inside your base?!

@MrWonderstuff Yep, it's actually a great Troll resource but it's getting old now. The only other tricking is building fires on the edge of your bases as it reduce the respawn rate.

@captbirdseye Ah building fires - I didn't know if they attracted mobs or the opposite.

That troll is giving me nightmares, every time I mine rocks it pops up - freaky thing!
Was getting a little bored of grinding stones for my defences but moved on to Black Forest cave recon and that was more fun. There is a definite progression connection to Subnautica in play here, the game story such as it is linking to tool and materials progression. Very smart. Plus the lack of silly hunger and repair penalties reward your time rather than punish it.

I'm hoping they work on the respawn mechanic for mobs because gets really frustrating at some points espeically when mining - Grey dwarfs says hello.

There is a limit to attacks and daytime mining is much easier than night.

Up in the mountains now. The only reasonably safe place with silver I've found is a solid 2 days (at least an hour) sailing away at the edge of the map and coming back with a longship loaded with it was really fucking tense. The entire trip was really fucking tense, risking all my progression. Palpable sense of relief coming into dock.

Totally immersed in this, I am the viking.

    @magicpanda

Sounds like cargo runs through low sec space in Eve.

Quite tempted to pick this up.

@magicpanda Looks like you are progressing nicely. I'm still at the bronze stage and haven't had a go at the second boss yet. I assume you can craft winter woolies for the mountain?

Cor, you lot seem wellll ahead of me. I've only just got the antler pick axe thingy. I keep making little outposts for my man to sleep in across the map. Off to Black Forest next to hopefully get the next set of upgrades.

@MrWonderstuff The second boss goes down fairly easily with a bow and fire arrows. Third boss is a absolute beast.

Yeah Woolies are all part of the tier system which works so well.

Spent some time on the base tonight, had to expand just to fit all the stuff you need up and running to survive and put up a wall to keep the bellends out.

Managed to tame a couple of boars, wish I had done that much earlier, you can feed them raspberries.

Will be quite tempted to get a server up and running after a few game updates.

@Tomo I do the same...small outposts along the way - handy when it's dark and tipping it down.

I feel guilty about all the wood chopping so have decided to rewild the area I decimated with all the seeds I have.

So is Valheim one of those games that gets a lot of buzz, then people stop playing after ten hours because they hit a wall with the second boss?

@frightlever Not for me. I 'completed it' after around 80 hours in the first 10 days or so after it released. Didn't really notice any difficulty spikes, but wasn't playing solo.

Me too, mainly because of its gratuitous pubes and arse hair. A half-wall window in your dwelling is the perfect height and angle as it stomps by.

Boss #2 complete. Wasn't too bad. I love how I can use the environment and move out of the summoning location into the forest. I hate boss battles generally, but have realised it is the closed off, arena-style I really have an issue with. Now it's time to do a bit of sailing and see if I can find the next biome.

The swamp suuuuucks. Think me and my crew of 2 have finally mined enough to create iron weapons so I hope that'll make a difference.
