Fingers crossed for a Windows Phone revival.
I'd quite possibly buy one if they did! I find outside the pre-installed apps and a few other bits and bobs (mainly banking apps and whatsapp-like things) I don't use it for anything else other than, ironically, Office (with Teams).

A Surface-Duo Windows phone would be perfect for me, to replace my Note 10+

    Fuck I'm old :(
Last year I finally managed to decommission a server that was still running it.

Did read a story that the reason for the slow death of control panel is that the original code is poorly documented/maintained and there's a lot of reverse engineering their own software going on. So it's taking a long time to migrate to the new look UI. No idea if it's true but I've decided to believe it to make the world more interesting.

    Still prefer control panel though.

25 years ago... I remember I was doing an internship at a PC manufacturer and one guy had the first Windows NT version for evaluation. He was really excited and showed me how well it did multitasking and everything (regular Windows could not). Then I told him that my Amiga 500 could already do that for years, with a fraction of the specs that his PC was running. He was not amused ;)

I still keep a god mode folder around for that granular tinkering.

    @Carlo 28 years. That's nearly thirty.
Yes you are old (so am I).

Moving toward an OSXy aesthetic by the looks. I dunno, so long as it works and the interface isn't a mishmash of ancient, old, semi recentish and 10 I'd be okay with it. But that is never going to happen with all the legacy crap they still have to support.

And I see the explorer window is still as ugly as ever.

My only question is why? It's not like there's been a technological or architectural leap large enough to warrant a new version, or that 10 wasn't serviceable enough to bring it up to their idea of a more modern standard. Perhaps it's a manufacturer push to get MS to lop off the wedge of people who only just managed to meet the min spec to install 10 the last time and drive hardware sales.

Whatever it is, I don't see much point yet.

I like the elasticy pop-out animations like it's a Linux WM from 2008.

I thought Windows 10 was the last Windows to be sold, I'm not seeing a reason why I have to update again.

Meh. That "feature" list in the Verge article is underwhelming. Though it does sound that they are moving to a walled garden experience, including for games, which is exactly what Gabe Newell was worried about all those years ago. If it annoys that fat bastard I'll take two of them.

Doesn't look too bad with dark theme and the icons moved to the left... Oh wait, just like Windows 10!

Think I'll give them a couple of half year releases before I jump on board and let everybody else beta test it in the meantime. Windows 8 was enough of a learning experience for one lifetime...

That wasn't my take away, just that they're adding better integration with MS products. They learned their anti-trust lesson a long time ago.

That centred start menu looks horrendous.

I don't see the start menu enough to care about it, honestly. Looks operational enough at least. And you can move it to the left.

Plus the original 10 start menu used to look like this, so expect it to change.

The thing I'm more interested in is the font smoothing, looks a bit better than 10s. More apple-like, which I always preferred but was annoyed they newer lifted, despite the same smoothing being standard in a dozen linux distros for years now.

Didn't realise the full thing had leaked... Going to spin up a VM to have a quick poke around I think.

If I can move it to the left then I'll calm my tits. But woe betide any heathen I see with it centred

Haha, you can't change the taskbar layout at all via the UI if Windows hasn't been activated... That's one way to force people to pay!

    Cannot tell if serious.
