The processor in the Win 3 is using Intel's new Xe Graphics iGPU. It's above any of AMD's current Vega APUs. No idea if the RDNA2 part in the Steam Deck will be faster, but then it's a lot cheaper anyway, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were close or even a bit below. Drivers are definitely going to be better too.
The win 3 has a smaller screen too, 5.5” which is going to make a lot of pc games unplayable.
The controls are a bit fucked up too imo.
Also although the cpu is better, the GPU on Intel devices isn’t as good, and the drivers are crap and some games don’t work, destiny 2 just got fixed last week but hasn’t worked on Intel devices for at least a year.
I use my Win Max to moonlight stream from my pc and it’s great.

There’s product designers out there who could have made this look cool. You guys might not be so bothered but working in design myself, it’s so weird to see something of this scale with such ugly design.

Registered 9 years ago@Worlds_ I hated it at first glance, but I suspect I might have been hasty. It's growing on me. Though I wish the screen was a bigger proportion of the machine.
But then again. I recall trying those massive Hori grips for the Switch, and thinking it was far too big. So maybe I'll hate it after all. Time will tell. -

How can it though? Even if it does 'die' it wouldn't be like if Nintendo suddenly stopped making Switch games. It's just a PC in a different form factor, it'll run anything that will run on any other PC.
Not touching this thing with a barge pole. I don't use a computer to play games, I use it to work and it just so happens to play games. This is utterly worthless to me.
It'll be dead in a year just like all their other crap.

In design terms, my worry is that it ends up with the same so-called ergonomics as the Wii-U gamepad.

I never noticed how bad the gamepad was until Xenoblade Chronicles X came out. That was the first game I put serious hours into on the Wii-U, rather than playing for a quick blast here and there. I got it on a Friday and played a hell of a lot of it over the weekend.
And on the Monday morning, I had white hot nails of agony shooting through my hands. I barely made it through the week at work, as even normal typing was intensely painful. Turns out the Gamepad's ergonomics were a fucking disaster. It was heavy, but the ridge along the back tended to put a lot of side-on pressure onto your index finger. At the same time, the lack of "wings" like you get on a normal console controller kept your palm cramped. The fixed the first of those problems for the Switch, though not the second.
The Deck does look a bit uncomfortably close to that gamepad. -

Registered 15 years ago@Rogueywon The shape of the Switch is the reason I bought one of the Satisfye grips. The added "wings" make a hell of a difference to the comfort when holding it for any decent length of time. I can see how this will be very similar, like you say - you need something for your palms to rest on. -

Registered 4 months agoWhilst I see what you guys are seeing (screen size, button placement), I actually meant the plastic design - the product design.
For example, take the classic iPod or iPhone. That's 'brilliant' design. The Nintendo DS was good, but there's very little about this Deck which is great design.
Forget button placements and all that, I'm meaning the actual shape or specifically the look of it.
Anyway, all this has got me thinking whether I should cancel and just buy a PC, get back into PC gaming. I used to do a lot 15 years ago, was literally one of the best players on C&C Generals 😂 and I still miss RTS games so much. Hmmmm -

Registered 10 years agoI just preordered one for getting back into some RTS games, C&C and SimCity 2000 etc. I weighed up restricted access to the TV, unable to buy a ps5 and the lack of premium Nintendo games like Metroid/mario RPG for my switch. -

With the size of it I am still surprised the battery isn't a bit bigger, matching the likes of the OneXPlayer and GPD WinMax specs at least (almost 60 W/h) and it is smaller than GPD Win3's too which is odd.

I wonder if it has a 'correct orientation's screen as one complaint from the Chinese devices has been that they are vertical screens by default.
Will be interesting to see how noisy it is too as I haven't had a 'fanned' Win handheld as my Vision is an Atom and passively cooled (and can get very hot). I had been very close to ordering a OneXPlayer during the IndieGogo but resisted it...
As for operating systems I will give SteamOS a try but may end up dualbooting (if I can get a reliable Win10 key or my retail box Win7 will install and upgeade for free (as apprently it still works)). I assume actual compiled for Linux emulators and the like may run a tad better without the Windows overhead but have never tried any linux variants on a PC. -

Folks on the Aya Neo discord are estimating that the 8 RDNA2 CUs in the steam deck are about twice as powerful as the 6 Vega CUs in the 4500U.
Most of the games I’ve played on handheld PCs have been GPU bound so I think this bodes well for the steam deck outperforming anything on the market right now. Maybe. -

Yes but honestly a designer could have designed the shape better. It doesn't have to be ugly, which it is in product design terms. Basically, there's no excuse.

Without being able to hold one in my hands, I have my concerns about the button and stick placement.
Having the analogue sticks directly next to and inside the d-pad and face buttons doesn't strike me as immediately comfy. I have small hands so reaching the sticks with my thumb might not prove the comfiest.
Just getting flashbacks to using the old original Xbox Duke controller; it's doable bit not the comfiest. -

Registered 12 years agoI’ve been using the Index for a while, I’d be surprised if the ergonomics on this will be bad. It’s hard to imagine without holding one, I got the WiiU gamepad out to get an idea what it might be like, but this thing is 1.4 pounds so hard to say. -
