LG OLEDs - get the CX or wait for next year's models?

I've been using an LG B8 OLED for a few years, and I'm still pretty smitten with it. But the lack of HDMI 2.1 support and VRR has made me consider upgrading, now that I have both the new consoles.

My original plan was to wait until next year's models, but I've noticed that the CX is now well within my price range for this kind of thing (quite a bit less than I paid for the B8 in fact). So I'm considering getting myself one in a few months.

So that made me wonder, how might next year's models improve on the CX? What, if anything, is missing from the CX that LG might "fix" next year? The main thing I'd change with my B8 if I could is the reflectiveness of it, but afaik there are no rumours that that's going to change (right?). So is there any reason to wait?

(Edit: The primary purpose for the TV will be playing games, with video a distant second-place consideration. I don't give a damn about the Smart TV functions as I use a Shield TV Pro for that.)

The 65 CX is 1599 while the 65 C1 is 2499. The short answer to your question is that the differences between the two are not worth the extra money.

The C1 has a better processor and a different (but less appreciated) OS, slight improvements to post processing and it's got a lower input lag (-9ms) for gaming. Up conversion to 4k is better and it's got all of the free view apps.

    Basically get the CX.

I managed to get a 55 CX for 1029, its arriving today.

Thought about getting a Phillips OLED instead, but all other models at a similar price see m to have a caveat/drawback where as all reviews for the CX are glowing.

Mind you, I bought a gaming laptop a week before the Steamdeck was announced so probably do the opposite of what I do

You're all gonna hate me for this, but here (Czech Republic) the 55" CX is now 25,000 crowns, which is roughly equivalent to 850 (hence my asking this question).

Almost seems rude not to at that price. Cheers everyone. Gonna wait a month or two because I'm starting a new job in a couple of weeks, but my mind's basically made up now.

Yeah the Phillips oleds are good and I liked the ambilight. What I didn't like oddly enough was the remote, which looked a bit 70s, is easy to mispress buttons on and has an annoying "Rakuten TV" button in the middle.

The Phillips is probably better for films and TV, but the CX is the better all rounder I think.

I'd still get the CX and put the difference to something else out save it for the C2 which should have a significantly improved panel , (brighter and with better eco features iirc).

Both amazing prices. Given the UK politics thread, I quite fancy a move. Any hint of facism in CZ?

@CalamityJames Keep an eye on stock levels
Wait too long and they'll be very hard to get hold of...

@Dougs Good point and I loved the place when I went there for a week.

I've decided to give the news s break myself. I was looking yesterday and it was just unmitigated misery.

I have a BX which has been excellent for the 7 months I've had it.

It's basically a budget version of the CX with a slower processor and 2 fewer HDMI 2.1 ports.

I'm kinda stunned that anyone thinks a B8 needs replaced. Still an absolutely stellar TV.

The only significant improvement in this year's ones are the new brighter panel but that's only in the G1 and up, which is a fair bit more expensive.

Dunno, 120 Hz and vrr seem like substantial upgrades.

We literally have a B7 and and BX side by side in the living room, so can do really good comparisons. The B7 is mine and the BX is my partner's, and I haven't seen anything on it that's made me the slightest bit jealous. Even comparing a 120hz game to a 60hz game, for me the laws of diminishing returns kicks in.

But that's just me, and I do get that sometimes you just want to treat yourself to something new and shiny.

@Hiphopopotamus According to Digital Foundry, VRR makes a world of difference with games that have a frame rate that comes in fits and spurts, or games with minor but annoying frame pacing issues. Games are smooooth and it just works.

Of course, only the Series X supports VRR, as well as 120fps Dolby Vision. The PS5 supports neither of these features, despite having had ample chance to add them by this point. The fact Sony's TVs also have issues delivering 4K@120fps makes me think Sony are having issues with their tech at the moment.

This whole situation is making it very difficult for me to decide whether to buy a Series X or PS5.

Anyway, yeah, I'd just get a CX. I only use mine as a TV currently, and it's great.

I can compare a B7 directly to a B9 and they look the same to me. In fact the biggest day to day difference is the OS is slower on the B9.

Id be tempted to recommend whatever the economical option is. Were well past the OLED teething issues such as dim HDR etc

Id definitely not buy a brand new model and pay 1000 premium versus waiting a few months.

Wasn't the CX the first time they introduced the more hardcore screen preservation technologies? Given that it's an OLED panel, that ain't nothin'.

Also, as tempting as the BX prices might be, remember that it's about half the peak brightness of the CX which will impact the HDR (which already lags behind the non-OLED sets).

For my part, I delayed my 55CX purchase until after the C1 launch. I haven't yet regretted it. But we're not far away from Black Friday now if you wanted to roll the dice on a cut price C1.

Already we are seeing the C1 getting firmware updates more rapidly than the CX and earlier. So there's the longer term support aspect to consider.

Definitely buy something for the features it has now rather than what it's supposed to get later - iirc the Sony models are still having trouble with HDMI 2.1.

Think my next telly will probably be a 77C2 when the price comes down enough, looking at 18 months I suppose...

I haven't had problems with HDR brightness on my BX but I did go to it from a non-HDR set.

Does the CX have decent audio passthrough for HDMI ARC? My current TV (a 5 year old Samsung led) has poor support, it can't send any 5.1 signal back to my amp that it can decode. Hoping things have improved since!

Would be cool if you could turn the 2 tvs into a mega screen.

Im sure if a CX couldnt do it you should probably start pointing a finger at your amp. Or the HDMI cable
