Dreamcast

I recently got a Dreamcast with a stack of games. But unfortunately most of them are sh*t with the exception of Shenmue, Crazy Taxi and Virtua Tennis. I was wondering how many people here use their dreamcast regularly and what games they would recommend, RPG’s especially, and are the games still available in most high street game shops? Is it still possible to use it to connect to the net? I’m not interested in using any of the games online functions just basic email and browsing.

"But unfortunately most of them are sh*t"

You either have the wrong games or are rather ill.

To connect to the net you need to get hold of the newer browser software. The easiest and maybe only way to get it is with Phantasy Star Online 2.

Excellent games to get are -

    Phantasy Star Online 2
Soul Calibur - still the best beat-em-up on any platform
    Metropolis Street Racer.
    Skies of Arcadia
    Grandia 2
    Rez
Ikaruga - only just came out import only, needs a boot disc.

    Other good games

    Daytona USA
Speed Devils - not the 2nd game
    Virtua Fighter 3tb
    Headhunter
    Sega Rally

Nice one ssuellid. You either have the wrong games or are rather ill. The wrong games! I bought it as an all in package. Mortal Kombat and about 5 wrestling games. Will I be able to use any ISP I want, or is it all through Sega. Are there still many people playing on the servers?

Ok, what ssuellid said and add:

Bangai-O : Mad Shoot-em-up, you'll either love it or hate it..
Mr Driller : Simple and addictive.
House of the Dead 2 : You can pick this up with lightgun pretty cheap. Fun while it lasts.
Seaman : For novelty value. Downright weird talk 'em up.
Jet Set Radio : I prefer this to the XBox version.. Great tunes and chilled gameplay.

Also take a look at dcemulation. All kinds of cool stuff for the dreamcast including SNES and Megadrive emulators..

oh and Samba De Amigo! I know there's no RPG's in here but you shouldn't play those too much anyway ;)

You will be able to use any ISP with the new browser. There are some people still playing but not many, I have not played online with the DC for ages and I have no idea where to look now.

I forgot to add Chu Chu Rocket which is very good.

Edit - also forgot Sambo de Amiga (spelling?)

jiroczech, I forgot to mention House of the Dead. Have that and the light gun, haven't played it yet, i also have confidential mission another Sega gun game, it's not bad.
What are the VMU's for? other than save games.

Some games like Sonic came with little games that you could download to the VMU. Also some games used it as a little display - Speed Devils used it as a radar.

    Keyser_Soze whispered:

Not a lot. Some games let you download mini-games to the VMU. Skies of Arcadia for example has a naff mini-game that lets you collect stuff that you can then use in the full game.

Oh, they're also sometimes used to display additional information to individual players. I think Ready 2 Rumble uses the VMU to display stats or something, and the best use of it has to be with Virtua Tennis. You can actually play the game by watching a little stick figure version on the VMU.

Heh. I'll have to stop double posting what ssuellid's saying.

Ahab, have you played Tokyo Bus Guide? If so, what's it like?! Sounds insanely dull. I've looked for an (cough).iso(/cough) but never seen one.

Thanks lads both of you have been really helpfull. Is it hard to make it play imports? What do you need, modchip, action replay, boot disc??

Very easy to play imports.. you can download a bootdisc that will let you play games from any region. No modding required.

    Also

Resident Evil: Code Veronica is excellent

Millenium Soldier Expendable is worth a laugh.
    Incoming is ok as well.

These are pretty good PC FPS conversions: -

    Soldier of Fortune
    Doom III
    Unreal

One of the best and mostly unknown of multiplayer gems is Fur Fighters in FluffMatch mode.

DOA2 PAL was supposedly as good as the japanese version but with the extras of the US version and its said that the PAL version is a popular import in Japan. It is good its not as good as Soul Calibur - nothing thats been released on any other platform since is either.

I got the console, 2 pads, 2 VMU's, official light gun, the above games I mentioned and some other ones. All for €50(Str£32). That was second hand from a mate though.

There were some good deals on ebay last time I looked.

About 6 weeks ago Tesco were selling off their stocks of DCs for £25 - I picked up one as a spare. Some stores may still have some.

    Also

F355 Challenge - its a challenge to get the car around the track but well worth it.

Sega Bass fishing - a must have with the official controller

Yes, dcemulation has a needed tools page where you can get a disc image of Utopia which should do the trick. There are also commercial products like Xploder and DC-X that do the same thing (as well as letting you cheat - that's what f**ked PSO)

Also worth looking out for is Panzer front, I have the JAP version, which I think was the only one released. If you are into EXCITING tank battles, its very, very good.

    Few more favorites;

Sega Marine fishing - Loadsa fish
Le mans - Stands up well today
    Toy commander - Hidden gem
Hundred swords - excellent slash em up
SF rush 2049 - especially in MP
Revolt - £5 the only version with decent framerate

I look at my collection of DC games and think 'how did it go so wrong'. Most of the games would get away with being released tomorrow.
