I thought the shuffle was completely useless. :-)

This is a proper mp3 player, but such a size that it will comfortably fit in a pocket with my phone and wallet.

I dunno. I just don't get a colour screen on an mp3 player, especially one that small. What is the point exactly? Or is it just so you can show it around and make people go "Oooh" at it?

Also, there've been credit-card sized mp3 players around for eons. Sure, not with 4Gb of space, but I remember seeing at least one tiny one that supported compact flash.

On a side-note, I also dislike this whole "Let's make an all-in-one singing dancing phone!" phase that's kicking off. A phone is a phone. I want to call and text on it. If I want to surf the web/play games/listen to music on the go, I'll get something that can actually handle it properly.

    /rants mindlessly

For me it's so that I can play some songs I want to hear instead of a premade order or shuffle. Doesn't have to be a colour screen.

    No video ipod then?
  • Deleted user 7 September 2005 20:25:09
Yeah, a screen I can understand, that lists the music and has basic menu functionality. But..the photo thing. "Display your photos on the iPod nano!". Yes. Display them in their full one-inch colour glory.

Bah. I'll stop ranting now. Let's just say I've had a dislike of Apple beaten into me from years of having rabid mac obsessed fanboys for mates.

EDIT: Hm. Just noticed it has to have a dock to connect. Not much good for yoinking music from a mate's machine.

Yeah, I know. It's just a case of if you don't have the dock with you, and hear something you like, and want it, and so on. I do that a lot with my player.

Bah. Ignore me. I'm just needlessly nitpicking. :p

When are they going to start amazing us with some really cool new computer stuff, or a media centre, or something? We've been expecting it for *ever* - jeez, over 6 months since the mini launch and still no iVideo Store?

Yeah but, this was a music event. Surely you weren't expecting them to roll out anything other than a new music product?

The dock connecter can either be used to mount in a dock, or you can plug a cable straight into it. If they're selling the dock seperately then how else would you expect people to use it without buying one? You *can* use a cable with it, and it ships with one.

I don't see the cable listed anywhere in accessories. The only thing that remotely looks like it is the USB charger, and that doesn't specify if you can transfer files using it. Even the details for the supplied USB cable say you'll need the dock.

EDIT: Hm. I could be reading that wrong though. But to me anyway, it appears you'd need the dock to do any transferring.

I'm with you otto. I'm guessing that not much is going to happen till the first intel macs launch...

I still dont understand how they are going to manage that transition smoothly. I guess we will see.

You're looking at the wrong thing. It's not an accessory because it's supplied. You seriously think they would sell an iPod Nano without supplying the cable you need to connect it to the iTMS?

Not to be pedantic, but the Apple website lists it as an "included accessory".

But yeah, I see now. I was reading it as the dock being as included in the package. So yeah, you're right. My apologies.

This is what the shuffle should have been really. I think this is great. I love normal iPods, hated minis and shuffles but this is great. I'm not gunna buy one myself cos I have a 40gb 3rd Gen, but perhaps one for the gf for her bday/chrimbo.

GAWD this puts me in such a dilemma!

I've just bought a silver iPod mini from Shivoa for £105 (today!). Now, I'm pretty certain I'll be able to sell it off for this amount again, and I can certainly afford to pay an extra £40 for a black (*droooool*) nano. I'm a bit concerned about the 2GB storage tho, and it does look awfully fragile - not something you want to drop/sit on/put in a pocket with a bunch of loose change.

    What. To. Do.?

    /NGH!

EDIT: WTF is up with the price - a 4GB costs the same as a 4GB mini?!?

Question to people who know Apple better:

The nano spec sheet says that it has upgradable firmware to cope with future codecs. Does this mean that it might be able to play oggs at some stage, or are Apple not the type of company to care?

Fnarr! Why is it that the Apple.dk website says "starting at 1599 DKR" (266USD), which I assume is for the 2GB version - yet Apple.com says 249USD (1500DKR) for the 4GB one!?!

    The agony!

Neuros are supposed to be coming out with a small mini player at some stage. Not "Apple" mini, but much smaller than the original Neuros "Designed by XBox" player.
I still *heart* my Neuros, it's just isn't pocket sized.

No. I've decided to stick with the mini. I would be scared to death of breaking the nano, and I reckon I'd be better off saving my money. When the buzz of a new gadget wears off, I won't care much about the extra bulk of the mini.

I think this thing is quite cool. Like otto said it would be even cooler if it was more of a jump, rahter then a transition from mini to shuffle, but it's still an impressive looking thing.

Gonna reap Apple a fortune in people buying replacements for squished nanos as well :)
