DOOM III-Fallen Hero or Betrayd King? Since the time of introducing nVIDIA's in my oponion "real big jump";Geforce3;id people were working on the title.considering the length of this campaigne it seems quiet looooong. But thts not all the story this long period has brought lots of pros n cons to this game. Until recently DOOM III was the next best thing for gamers to dig-in besides juicy burgers. But now big daddy came out of nowhere:The ATI backed Half-Life 2. Actually DOOM III seems to be a very hard and respectable tech effort for developing somthing unusually different! They had gave out some infos about the game from time to time,as we know they first showed us some movie runnig with GF3 but now a GF4 seems not quiet enough to take full advantage of all the beauties of DOOM III. This shows that id soft wanted to use every tech ability brought up by new VGAs from the time of GF3 and GF4 till now that its the radeon 9800 and GFfx 5900 era.Seems its time for them to think developing is enough. Just when and why DOOM III lost the first place 4 gamers who look up for future releases. Is it the price id soft had to pay not working undercover? Or in other words is it the price of cooperation with nVIDIA? Is it like DOOM III being the model for other developers working on their title in secret? Is it valve software who has taken the main inspiration from DOOM III and done HL-2 undercover? Is it all related to the old ATI nVIDIA rivalry? Is it the general policy of ATI not being very loud n talk alot but do alot strategy? Is DOOM III Fallen Hero?Guess not it is still intersting even though ive seen HL2 gameplay movie and also played DOOM III demo.surely it'll bring lot of profit to id and activision's pocket. Is DOOM III the Betrayed King?Seems likely True Edited by dod at 08:13:22 12-06-2003 Edited by dod at 09:24:01 02-07-2003 |

Registered 19 years agoNo, Doom 3 is a rather impressive display of id's new 3d engine which will soon be used in every Medal of Honour game, and come to think of it any other 1st person shooter that needs a top engine, this is what id do, they are very good at it.
When Quake 3 first came out everyone seemed to think it impossible that they'd own a graphics card that did hardware t&l now we all have one. The same will happen with id's new engine sooner or later (preferably sooner
) we'll all have cards that match the GF4 or Radeon 9800 spec.
The demo that was leaked was simply a Radeon optimised version of the game (which in code terms wasn't that optimised), there is no way id is going to put all their eggs in one basket and support one manufacturer, that doesnt make sense from a licensing point of view.
Basically this is id investing in the future of 1st person shooters. Sooner or later all and sundry will be using it.
The difference between the Doom 3 engine and the HL2 engine is fairly simple. Doom 3 is a graphics engine, pure and simple and a mighty impressive one. The HL2 engine is more of a tool that people can use to develop games from. The HL2 engine already comes with code that can handle multiple materials and physics and has code to handle AI for bots etc. If you've seen the mahoosive demo from E3 you'll know what I mean, its basically an extrapolation of the original HL engne which enabled counter strike to be made (there was very little code written to actually get CS up and running).
The Doom3 engine IMO looks more impressive than the HL2 engine graphically. But thats all the Doom3 and any id engine is all about they simply let you draw nice pretty graphics on screen.
To summarise, HL2 is an all in one engine, Doom 3 is a GRAPHICS engine and no more, what you do with the code once you've licensed it from id is up to you.

Registered 19 years agoDoom III is an incredible tech demo for the new iD graphics engine, much as Quake 3 was previously. The game itself is almost a secondary concern (I suspect that Carmack made more money from the licencing of the Q3 engine than he did in actual sales of the game itself). Obviously the game has to be playable, but I doubt it's the primary objective (note that most reports on Doom III concentrate on the graphics, rather than the gameplay).
Half Life 2, on the other hand, looks quite impressive graphically but more importantly it gives the impression of a more 'fun' game. Anyone who can remember the first game would be interested in playing a proper sequel (provided there are no 'alien world' levels), and the E3 demo/presentation delivered on this - enough 'new' and interesting stuff. -

Registered 19 years agoIf you have a geforce 4/radeon 9500 pro or better you will be fine @ 1024x768 no AA with 30+fps according to Hardocp & anandtech. Thats a pretty decent speed considering a GF4 is more than a year old, and that this is a new ID game. It wont be that bad really, all the hoopbla being made IMO is just Ati & nvidia making you THINK you will need a $600/euro Radeon 10000 or whatever to enjoy it. -

Registered 19 years agoSay have u played the preview version ?i had ,here's what i say about it:
First :a system of AMD XP2000+ 512Mb DDR333 Dual channel mode and a Ti 4600 Gf4 gets the game runnig no lower than 22 FPS with the default resolution and details that is 640*480 mediumquality window mode.(DDR timing 2,2,2,2)
This is for sure tht running the final version needs more powerfull system.
U got some controls over number of lights u can have in the game, the more lights less FPS of course.
Theres a possibility to see all polygons in three increasing degrees.
Ok about game:The atmosphere is actually haunting enough to make u have ur eyes wide open.
Really cool sound effects i maself like the sound of swinging lamp very much.
Maybe u have heard about great shadows implemented in this game.
But actually u have to c it 4 urself :long shadows of two monsters backlighted coming towards me in a tunnel really made me grin.
Remember fat monsters?when u beat them (actually u have to kill them two or three times) theres an awsome work of art done here by id ppl:"The dead corpse slipping ability".Man u gotta c it for urself when u walk pushing towards fat monsters their body rolls on the ground just like a real piece of dead meat.
Its so natural u'll think its a big piece of jelly ur pushing on the ground.
"No one can possibly imagine how many hours has gone through for converting the physics of this movement into computer codes, let alone the genius(es) who got all the physics of tht on his mind."
I amused myself playing dead corpse pushing so many times.
But its sad tht among 5 kinda monsters u encounter in the demo only fat ones will roll on the ground (hope the real game have it 4 all monsters)
And the Blood effect's incredible, actually i made blood bath here had to wash my face after killing the beast.I went on shooting the corpse for 5 minutes and still blood comes out and still got new patterns of blood splash on the wall.I painted the house red.we can satisfy our bloodlust in this game.
ok tired huh?
Theres a general rule about all the monsters :they r so aggressive and persistant maybe we havnt seen such monsters b4.
Ummm aha one more thing actually i try not to kill the monsters i usually play hide n seek withem to watch them move around and test the AI the latter is gonna be better in the final vers for sure.
Did u know these monsters dont have mercy even on each other?
I mean sm kinda monsters attack each other its fun watching them doin tht.
And of course i have to mention about the amazing real physics calculation of throwing objects like boxes.u can have lots of fun just playing with boxes.
And seems they wanted everything to conform with real lifephysical rules one thing always being neglected in old games.like when two monsters r knocked out laid down dead.Thelower one wakesup manages to get up half-way but cant get all the corpse up bcuz the fat ass is still KOed over him cool huh?
We have 3 maps not too long maybe there r secret places I havnt explored yet. pooof i think i gotta go have ma dinner ppl r calling me . sorry about the grammer or misspelling i was in a hurry.

See the important word there? Preview. Or, to be more accurate, alpha. It is in no way representative of the final product, so any opinions you form regarding performance are essentially useless.

I don't think it's useless. It did show me that my PC could handle the graphics we had all seen in screenshots and the video quite well. Of course the final version will have different specs, but it's a clue at least, and a good one. -

Registered 19 years agoi think you'll only need these super powerful cards if you want to play doom with maxed out settings and 60+fps.
i've been playing the alpha with a ge force 2,obviously i had to do some tweaking but it runs at 25-30fps.(which i was suprised with)
i'm not sure what i'm trying to say,but there you go.

It's alpha, not even in good enough shape to beta-test. If your PC managed to run it well, then great. But just because a pre-release version works great for you, does not mean the final version will (See Black Hawk Down). Also, there are plenty of people with top-end systems oc'd to hell and back with 9700 Pros struggling to get over 6fps. Which for me makes it fun to play with but useless for performance judging.

True. The final version may demand different specs, though I thought code gets optimized rather than more demanding, but I don't know enough about this.
However, it rendered people's claims "you'll need a 3GHZ/Radeon 9800 PRO/1 GB monster to display graphics like this" useless, cause I saw exactly those graphics (ie the graphics we had all seen on screenshots and the E3 trailer) on my inferior system. It is a clue.

Yeah, it can go both ways and often does. Most of the time the difference is small, but not in all cases. Both performance and stability can take a nosedive inbetween beta & gold.

Registered 20 years agoSo we're talking about the Alpha, yes? The one that was released before you could buy a 9800 or any FX chip. The one released when nVidia's top of the line was a AGP 8x GF4 4600. I think they've probably been updating it a bit since then to use the latest and greatest cards available and you can't really say anything from what you've seen abut the final product as that alpha leak was taken while Doom 3 was still in heavy development. Only recently has the official benchmarking demo/beta-esque been released and even then it was to a select few and came with the notice that even it might not represent actual release performance.
Remember when you first saw Quake 3? That leaked alpha where there were no bots and all the graphics were a bit funky. What about the second one where most of the bugs had been fixed and you could call bots with the console but they always ran towards the wall. Neither of them represented the final product and just because my old Rage128 could work with them it didn't mean Q3 retail full detail would be playaible on it.
If we're going to talk about Doom 3 performace I think all we can look at are the benchmarks done recently on the high end cards by the select few review sites and say that even the current top of the range PC will be able to run it, in max detail maybe just, and if you're a bit behind (1.5GHz, GF3/R8500) you might like to save up a bit of cash so that when the game is released you can buy some small upgrades if you want it to run a bit more quickly or with more details on. As always it is really really hard to buy the right upgrades before the game is released and there isn't actually much point in it as prices are always on the downward spiral so you might as well wait until you feel you need more power and invest then rather than spending more money now. -

Probably not for me. As id have yet to send me that press preview edition I asked them for I can't really say for sure but I like the whole idea of low enemy numbers onscreen and the almost survival horror vibes. Walking around a darkened level and jumping when an enemy smashes out through the wall. As diversions go what else would you rather be doing in the dark in front of a computer screen? -
I agree with Shivoa. I am starting to sound like a broken turntable, but Doom 3 does definitely not look like your standard generic shooter à la Unreal 2. It looks much more like a survival-horror meets FPS hybrid, and the release lists are not especially crowded with games like this. It probably won't be especially deep, but I guess it'll shine at the things it does.

Doom III will live or die on the quality of the story and scripted events. But (I know I've said this before - call be Mr Cynical) I really feel id concentrate on technology and engine sales revenue these days, obviously it is in their interest to keep gamer's interest going to maximise publicity for the engine in the days of development so they can go ahead and license it away before the games release (as game development is often so protracted). I really hope that the game is good, but I feel id's interest's lie elsewhere.

Registered 19 years agoI think tht what i said about the long period of developing DOOM3 is coming true.
uc if id managed to get this game published sooner it would have been more successful.
i personally like doom3 but not releasing the game sooner smhow was like id ppl working against themselves.i feel releasin the gamong last fall or winter was a good idea.
weve noticed hl2 being the winner at e3 they say.
i know being the winner is not tht important maybe but it was more rational to have this game out sooner thn this
we could have doom3 out b4 even weve heard of hl2.
but this is what i wish ,id has got it reasons 4 sure. -
>id has got it reasons 4 sure
Not to try and rip it or anything but their reasons are probably quite simple: it wasn't finished last year.
Oh, and a bit of EG forum etiquette, dod:
tht = that; smhow = somehow...
You see where that was going. We are not all down with the yoof speak here at the forums and so some of us will have a hard time reading your abbreviated messages if you only write in consonants. Call me old fashioned but I enjoy the vowels as much as all the other letter, if not more so.
I have of course just violated the etiquette by dissing someone and so will now implode.
