Registered 18 years agoWhy?
EDIT: I think it's odd. But then I can see it's potential too.
The "remote control" is presumably to make the controller accessible to those scared off by traditional gamepad designs.
It supports a full range of motion in full 3D including tilt functionality which has huge potential for putting you 'in the game' so to speak. i.e. The controller would be a gun in a FPS, a steering wheel in a driving game, a joystick in a flying game or a pointer in an RPG or strategy game.
It's a bold, bold move. It could be the worst mistake ever. Or it could be genius.
Now let's see what they do with it...

I seem to like the new design and the way it works.
Don't go hard on me just because I like it.

The 'why?' was directed at Phat Cat.
I'm very, very intrigued. Not loving it or totally convinced. But intrigued. Just like I was when I first heard about the DS...

No matter what you say its still a remote control
/is unimpressed
actually in some ways this is a step backward in controller design...it's not even original. just "enhanced" Apple style and everyone pretending its completely original*
*admitedly some parts are, but the "remote" style controller is not new. ASCii have made at least one similiar style controller for the playstation range
note to nintendo:
"gimmicky" designs often backfire. *cough* virtualboy*cough*

Registered 18 years agoWell it looks as if Nintendo is going after the non-gaming market with avengence. Their succes will depend on
a) That market going for it
b) Not scaring off (too many) existing gamers
Here's hoping that mad ol'Nintendo can pull it off. -

Oh dear me. The Revolution is going to end up as a very small niche product bought by people who love the DS. If this thing doesn't have ports on for standard Cube controllers they're in big trouble.
It does have ports for them. So breath easy.
"Players will also be able to plug in various expansion controllers through a port on the bottom of the unit, including a classic expansion to allow traditional control of the Revolution's back-catalogue titles, and an analogue stick device with Z1 and Z2 triggers for what Iwata jokingly referred to as a "nunchuck-style expansion" - presumably more in terms of looks than action. It will also be possible for gamers to use two controllers at once." -

It has inputs for standard controllers. 99 games will use those for every ine that uses the puck.
And four out of five of the puck games will be crap
Donīt you at least mean 99 out of a hundred or do you really know the absolute amount of games to ever be released on the system? Also I would like to give you an award for coming up with a new derogatory slang for something you know nothing of faster than anyone else.
Shouldnīt you be over at the 1up forum...? -

On the contrary; I think Sony and Microsoft have lost touch and they'll likely be trying to catch up with Nintendo by developing their own versions of the controller.
I can really appreciate what Ninty are trying to do here but this gives the firm impression that they've lost touch altogether.
Whereas the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will have all the same games as the PS2 and Xbox only with more polygons, the Revolution will be something completely new. I know which I'm more excited about. -

Registered 19 years agoSo this is the revolutionary new controller that they couldn't unveil earlier because 'everyone and their dog would copy it OMGWTF!!!'? Somehow I can't imagine that the designers at Sony and Microsoft will lose any sleep over that... thing.

Registered 18 years agoUrrr. Well. Unexpected. But I guess that was 60% of the point.
I can see fps working better on this system than on either the MS and Sony controllers. You aim it and shoot with a trigger on the bottom, almost like a real gun, woohoo!. (walking done with extention analogue thingy)
Other games.....I dunno. -

Registered 18 years agoI have. Reading the gamespot article the promo video seems a bit misleading. In the vid they are moving the controller's pointing section far offscreen, pretending it works (like the fishing or the golf promo sections). The gamespot article suggests this wouldn't work one bit. -
Hm. Too early to form an opinion. The idea of slashing it like a sword for a fighting game sounds pretty neat though. -
Fantastic! Anyone who hasn't seen the video should look it up straight away - it highlighted a number of ideas to me that I hadn't even considered (I think my favourite was an elderly couple using the controller as a conductor's baton).
The proof will be in the playing, of course - I want to believe it'll be great for FPS's but until I try it I'm just not 100% sure. -

The video is excellent, very nicely done. I loce the scene with the pair obviously playing a survival horror game and pointing the flashlight. -

I don't think (or hope) it would work like the light-gun technology of old (which needed a CRT). There are way too many different display devices for that to work nowadays. It has to be their gyroscope technology IMO, and that'd work when pointed off-screen as it senses relative motion and twist. -

Registered 17 years agoAmazing. Thus has SOOOOOOO much potential to be huge, just imagine, in Zelda, it could be used to immerse yourself like never before. How about a spot of magic ball tennis with Ganondorf? Swinging your sword? Using The Hookshot? it would be awesome.
The only real danger is that it turns out a bit like the DS with next to no decent titles until almost a year after release. Don't get me wrong, i love my DS, but the release schedule so far has been poor, with only a few notable exceptions.
I really can't wait for this now, although I'm not even going to bother explaining it to my Sony and Microsoft loving mates, I'll just get laughed at cos they won't understand, ah well. I can really see how Nintendo is aiming at getting everyone involved, with those kind of possibilities. I'm particularly excited about FPSs and RPGs on this system, the controller is really gonna make you feel more directly involved with the game, more hands-on, you know? -

Registered 16 years agoAbsolutely. I can totally agree that more physical direct interaction with the games can only help immersion. Waiting to see what they do with it though. Or if anyone wants to linky the promo vid. -
It'll be great for casual gamers, and old hoary gamers whose RSI acts up at the first flip of an analogue stick. I also particularly like the seeming party game when the girls took turns to swipe at something on the screen.
