Hiya chaps - couldn't see this on the news page so i thought i'd give you all a little exclusive. the xbox core unit wont support xbox live out of the box, you must first 'create' your xbox live account which requires either a memory card or a hard-disc. That probably seems pretty obvious when you think about it, but i know the few people i spoke to who are getting a core unit said "i don't care about saving single player games, i'll only be playing online".

.. no you wont, not without that £39.99 memory card :D

I'm the other way round (matron!) i don't care about online, for me it's all about the offline action.
    Sorry if that offends anyone.

Jellyhead - a few developers are cutting features out which will then be 'enabled' via an xbox live update. which if you ask me is just going to really piss off the 56k users and single player gamers.

Hopefully they'll include all the patchs for free on the official mag cover-disc.

I still really don't see the point of the core unit, other than a nice headline of "Xbox360 only £209.99/local currency equivalent" you'd have to be a complete idiot to buy one.

I'm not anti-online it's just not practical for me to get broadband where i am and it's too expensive for me to move, so i'm stuck in limbo.
I'm planning on getting a hd xbox after the revolution is released so maybe i'll be online by then.

These cut features only relate to Online Multiplayer anyway so shouldn't effect offline users.

not only does the core unit not support xbox live, it doesn't support saving your own games. the core unit is a rip off, but the premium edition is a really good deal.

buy the more expensive edition, if you've got brains.

But is the premium version good value because the core unit is a rip off?

people who buy the core unit don't deserve to go online.

To be fair, the 'core' PS1 and PS2 didn't allow you to save either...

True, but pretty much all consoles before the PS1 let you save, using ram on the cart. Even the Saturn lets you save out of the box. I'm hoping this model of shipping disc based consoles without any backed up RAM in them is just a temporary blip in the run of things.

When there's extra money to be made? Are you joking?

It wouldn't supprise me if the Rev needed one too!

Yeah, I would be surprised if the PS3 and the Rev come with some flash RAM in any form. Which, if you're comparing the 360 with consoles of its own generation, makes the offer look quite generous.

Haven't Nintendo said that it'll come with 512MB of flash memory for game saves, demo downloads and back catalogue downloads? Doesn't seem nearly big enough for game demos though. You'll be able to stick in an SD card or two to add to the storage.

MS are quite happy to freely dash money at this until they get the market share to close down their competitors...

I foresee a time when in desperation, the console manafacturers will discount consoles just like the mobile phone industry, and rely souly on 'Online Subscriptions' like Live to get their money back (and the hope thaty you'll keep buying games of course which will be downloaded directly from their services).

This will then cause the implosion of the games shops (Just like the music shops which diversified into the games market like HMV) and the collapse of Publishing houses themselves.

But I'm getting off topic somewhat...

Ooh, that's true. I'd forgotten about that. Yeah, it probably won't be enough in the long term, but then when are memory cards ever big enough? You always need to buy another one. But I appreciate the intention. Even if it probably only costs them pennies because memory's so cheap these days.

Maybe it was. Still, SD cards are far better value than memory cards and anyway, Nintendo can't profit from them unless you are stupid enough to buy a Nintendo branded Special Revolution SD card*

*Identical to other cards but 100% more expensive.
