Is it really that simple? It's only recently I've found that I've got a taste for cabbage, and leeks, and spinach, and butternut squash and all sort of veggies I thought I didn't like. I'd assumed it was because they thought that kids tastes things differently to adults. But maybe it's just because my mum used to boil the crap out of everything?

That was a late discovery for me too - that veg could be cooked and yet still be tasty and crunchy.

Yep, his whole 'persona' gets under my skin somewhat, but the boy's fantastic. His cooking is sensational and what he's doing for 'the kids', also with his restaurant '17' is brilliant. Need more ppl like him iyam.

One of our next door neighbours came over once, and asked what you do with garlic?

    She was in her forties!

It's not rocket science to pick up a cook book and just read it. If you get it wrong then you'll know next time where you made an error. Overcooked? Cook less. Too spicy? Less spice.

It's less funny without 'from the'.

And it's funnier when we're tlaking about a faceless corporation. With people there is the danger of mental pictures. That's not pretty.

It's a move in the right direction though.

I love the Sun's predictable response - they should tackle yobbish behaviour "instead"... o_O

    (a) Numerous studies have demonstrated the link between shit food and behavioural disorders.

    (b) The Sun decrying yobbish behaviour!?? Pot, kettle.

Did you see the 82yr old getting ejected from the Labour conference, Otto?

Curious to know if its been broadcast abroad. Bloke on one of last nights news was saying if it had happened in somewhere like China it would be international news.

    edit: below?
I did. Absolutely fucking outrageous. But no coverage here, I've only seen it in the UK press.

The Jamie/junk food story on the other hand is the front page story in the Globe & Mail.

mal, I do think that he's been the catalyst. Would it have happened if he hadn't pushed?

It's an utter scandal and really demonstrates the decline and fall of New Labour. They really need a kick up the arse. What a pity the UK's a one-party state at the moment. Putting the official opposition in power would do even more damage.

I thought the whole point was that kids can be fed healthy food for the same or less money. And anyway, frankly, spending a little on nutrition for school kids will save how much in healthcare and other related costs? It's simply unacceptable that we feed poison to children. Cos it is poison.

I may be a lazy fucker in most things but one thing I insist on is getting up to cook something healthy for the nipper and putting it in a thermos for her lunch. At first the school moaned because they said it was messy, but we told 'em to FOAD. Thankfully the nipper prefers veg curry and brown rice to nuggets & chips, bless her.

TT that may be so but it's no excuse to offer it officially sanctioned in places of education.

Personally, I'd also be in favour of a ban on junk food advertising on kids' telly.

Peej, you express my concerns exactly. If this issue has a point at all it's that nutrition shouldn't be a matter of class. I think there needs to be loads more publicity about the link between nutrition and behaviour. Do you remember that 'Child of Our Time' programme? There was one little boy who was basically a menace, a little gangsta in the making. They put him on Omega 3s and improved his diet, within a couple of weeks he'd changed personality completely. The morning after the programme went out, Boots sold out of Omega 3 supplements.

They just need to let people know what the consequences of feeding youngsters shit are.

I tell you how we've done it.

Make the damn stuff tasty. That's the beginning and end of the story. It's not rocket science.

It's no wonder that kids won't eat veg or lentils if it's bland, overcooked and looks like slop. It's so easy to make basic food tasty by adding in herbs & spices - plenty of fried onion, garlic, coconut milk, etc. I swear, our daughter is going through an incredibly fussy stage but she insist on lentils and rice for her dinner, or spinach (which we cook with plenty of garlic and onions and spices), or turnip curry. I'm serious! She loves it, and the only reason she loves it is because we make damn sure it tastes nice. If you wouldn't eat it, then your kids won't. But if they get exposed to tasty healthy food right from the start then they'll turn their nose up at junk.

Oh and it's incredibly cheap - fresh veg, rice, and dried herbs/spices. Much cheaper than frozen fish fingers or pizza or oven chips. Doesn't take long to cook either. AND you can cook it in bulk and freeze it.

Yes it really is. My daughter loves, LOVES, butternut squash soup - cooked with some buttery onions, roasted cumin seeds, chives and cream. I have to pretend that tomato soup is butternut soup to get her to eat it. She also adores cabbages - braised in butter and cooked in its own steam, with a few caraway seeds and raisins - maybe some toasted slivered almonds. Best of all is to bung all these things in a veggie biryani. What's not to like? If I'd had it like that as a kid I swear I'd have liked veg.

I remember seeing a programme where some mum on a Council Estate whinges about not having enough money to feed her kids so she gave them dried spaghetti to eat (mmm crunchy) with ketchup.

    o_O

How fucking expensive is it to boil water?? Or give them some raw carrots?? Or fry an onion??

It's like the woman who poisoned her baby with Ready Brek "because baby food was too expensive" - and people sympathised with her!!
