Just watched the video, that Radiant AI system looks absolutely quality if it does everything they say it does..

Registered 19 years agoLooks great... I wonder if it will work as well in practice as it does in the presentation. That AI system looks great, but you have to wonder if you'll actually notice any of it during the course of normal play.
I didn't get on with Morrowind and to be honest, I doubt I'll get on with this. It's just one of those things where I think it looks great and I love the idea, but when I actually sit down and play, it bores the pants off me.
I just think it looks like a great technical achievement and (without wanting to sidetrack the discussion too much) I absolutely cannot wait to see what these guys do for Fallout 3. -

Pretty much exactly what I was about to say. Looks stunning, but I just know I'll be bored rigid playing it. It's the lack of narrative I guess; as much I love the idea of exploring that beautiful world I think I need something more linear to keep me interested. Morrowind looked great and sounded wonderful on paper, but in practice I just got bored and frustrated with it.

Registered 19 years agoI hope the Radiant AI extends to forming relationships to the extent of forming a party. Handy if you are a tank and would like a caster to back you up. -

Registered 18 years agoOoh, that's the opposite of what I hope. I like being the lone ranger more than having a party. Leave that to the mmorpg's.

Registered 19 years agoYeah, but it would be optional, a sort of user initiated assistance if things get tricky. Plus, you can use them as mules. .gif)
The companion mod is one of the best things for Morrowind. -

I can honestly see myself spending DAYS just wandering around the randomly-generated countryside, killing deer and eating fungus. -

I remember one hired help in one of the expansions. I had kitted him out with semi-expensive armour. He just got in the way during fights and fled with my stuff
. Haven't tried the mod.
But as long as it's an optional thing (and not impossible to do without, difficulty wise) it's all fine with me.

Registered 17 years agoLoved Morrowind. Can't wait for this. My PC is no slouch, but the same was true when Morrowind came out and it still ran like shit so I'm expecting the same to be true now.
Therefore I'm thinking that this might be the final straw that convinces me to pick up a 360 at launch. -

Registered 18 years agoReally impressed by certain things - i.e. physics simulation, those luverly trees and the graphics in general BUT those people still look and move like automatons...
I would rather they spend the time coming up with interesting NPCs than try to come up with some kind of AI that vaguely simulates a daily routine. The NPCs in Radiata Stories have a daily routine AND they are full of personality and character

Heh, I actually bought RS as my main 'tide me over until Oblivion' game.gif)
...I'm enjoying it, primarily because (as you say) it's full of character.
I like bugging that girl sitting outside the save quarters every morning

Registered 18 years agoSome points:
1:She decides to waste a perfectly good potion so she can fire 3 or 4 arrows at a target??
2:She reads a book for a couple of seconds...
3:Then sits down to eat for a couple of seconds...
4:Then goes to sleep on top of her bed, is annoyed by her dog and FIREBALLS him???
5
oes all of this after inviting a perfect stranger into to her house who SHE THEN PROCEEDS TO TOTALLY IGNORE.
6:Remarkably happens to have pre-recorded dialogue to cover all these eventualities...
I dont think AI is precisely the term I would use... -

Just as you'd be a fool to judge the graphics of a game that still has several months before release, it'd be foolish to say whether or not the Radiant AI works or not, based on this very limited demonstration. What I saw was a character that was very aware of her surroundings, and used these in non-scripted ways.
And therefore hardly a very good demo for 'Radiant AI'... -

Registered 18 years agoSo why exactly did it seem:-
a:scripted
b:nonsensical
And, for the record, I'm not judging the game by this 'scene' as I'm actually really excited by the prospect of playing it. -

If it has the journal from Morrowind IŽll still be chucking it into the wall in frustration a few times now and then. Hope they spend some more time on storytelling this time as well. -

Because we're not used to this kind of behaviour in NPC's? And because the situation was probably rigged (i.e. all the "ingredients" for the scene (potions, meat, dog etc.) were carefully placed) for maximum effect.
So why exactly did it seem:-
a:scripted
Because the system isn't done yet - and true AI stil doesn't exist.
b:nonsensical
As do I. \o/

"Sorry if I offended you somehow :/"
You didn't, I can assure you. I suppose my reply DID seem a little snotty.gif)
I just think following some of the NPCs around and seeing what they get up to would have been much more interesting...
