Each year a friend and I travel to a European city for a day. It initially started as a Christmas Shopping trip, but rapidly changed to a whistle stop taster day incompassing some sights and a spot of lunch . . . oh, and the odd bit of shopping thrown in for good measure. We fly out on Stansted on Ryanair, as we can do it for under £30 return. Problem is, I'm not sure where to go this year. Can anyone recommend a city worth visitng that's easy to get around and has some sights worth seeing? Edit: Check here for a list of places Ryanair fly to as we're restricted by this, unless anyone can recommend an equally cheap carrier. Edited by DaisyD at 19:09:05 02-10-2005 |

Registered 16 years agoI thought Madrid too, but can't see a flight there. What's in Milan apart from shops? I was considering Berlin, but maybe going there anyway. -

Haven't checked Ryanair 'cause the site's being ghey for me, but Vienna is a gorgeous city that's well worth a visit. I want to move there with my girlfriend one day. -

Registered 19 years agoHow about saving up for a bit and actually staying for more than one day? Otherwise it's almost as if you're going just to add flags to a map.

Registered 20 years agoWhat about Geneva? Quick trip across and you're an hour away from Les Gets which is a nice small town and you can nab a cheap hotel and spend some time in the mountains as the weather should still be good.
If it's a city though....gotta be Rome. -

Registered 16 years agoI'd love to, but it's a sad fact that I have no one to go with. I've tried organising my mates to go on holidays and stuff before, but it never happens. But I get a taster and know that I'd want to go back. And I believe that you should go somewhere you've never been every year. -

Bloody good choice! There's lots to see, anything more specific you're after? I hope Sthlm gets snow in December, new snow esp. in the middle of the city is magic when everything looks like a Christmas card.

It's an excellent ethos. Just I'd be worried that I'd taint a particular place with a rushed visit and possibly never visit again.

Madrid was a good example, our forst day there was awful (as was the travelling) - second day was fantastic and I'd highly recommend it to anyone now.
There is one place I'd recomment - and you might be able to do it justice in a day. Granada - go and see the Alhambra - it's a days visit in itself and it's totally amazing! Should be able to get there fairly cheaply too. -

I guess Norway etc are all good if you book up early. -

Registered 16 years agoI know what you mean. Luckily I've not been tainted so far and would love to go back to the places I've been with the right company. Even have £100 worth of vouchers for Thomas Cook to put towards the right holiday. .gif)
The other thing is I want to see as much of the world as I can in my lifetime, but can't see how I'll ever have enough time or money to see as much of the world as I'd like, so my day's tasters are a good way to see bits of the world that I may never be able to go back to in the future. -

Gentlemen, here we have a classic example of womanitis: Let's ask for advice but no matter how much sense you make, no matter how many years you spend studying the subject, no matter how often you do the exact same thing, it's all irrelevant unless her friend agrees.
No offence DaisyD

Don't go to Oslo...obviously it'd be pricey, but the definition of Oslo is a bit loose...Torp is about a 3 hour bus trip from Oslo.
