For those who haven't seen them, some pics. Blimey, I have to admit, the actor they picked does look like a young Christopher Reeve. Hopefully he can play the part as well as Reeve did.

    Looking at those pictures....

Yes, the cape is too dark. And a bit odd looking (though I guess that's because it's a cape)

He does, 'tis true. However, let's be honest, red underpants over a blue lycra suite = extremely gay indeed.

best thing ive seen in a long time after the cliffhanger at the end of last season

I watched it last night. Smallville is one of fave TV progs from the last few years. This series looks like it'll be a corker, and probably the last.

What is it with the US and the 'fall' season, new Smallville, new Lost, new CSI. Torrent-tastic!

These photos are all pre-grading, keep in mind. Plus red is a very tricky colour in film.

Have a look at Hellboy, pre-grading he's a sort of a brown, post he's the proper sort of red.

And the logo size, keep in mind that unlike the comic, in the film you can't adjust the logo size whenever the character is in a distant shot or in a close-up to make it look best, you've got to find a middle road so it looks allright in both sorts of framing.

They've still got it wrong. The suit looks crap and it's the details like that that piss me off with these projects. You can't change the look of Supes' costume in order to fit the current trends, especially not the shield. It looks wank.

And the actor who plays Supes is scrawny (how they're going to explain him getting younger is another problem). In the piccy above look at the size of his arms compared to his head - he's a runt. Superman should look 'super' and imposing. Even Robin looks harder than this Superman.

I'll probably go and see this one, just because of how happy the first two made me when I saw them at the cinema. They look kind of cheesy now, but at the time, hell, woo, feelgood flicks!

I'll probably come out horribly disillusioned, but hey, you never know. Maybe it's possible to still suspend cynisism.
  • Deleted user 3 October 2005 14:12:45
Hmmm, I do agree he looks a little scrawny, although I'll wait to see him in full motion before I decide on him.

Still, I don't agree about the "super and imposing" thing. On Krypton he would be a normal "man", its the earth's sun that gives him his strength, not his muscle size.

I thought the first two were incredibly cheesy, yet there I am, every time they're repeated on telly I watch 'em.

Yeah, but he's still a superhero - not an average man. He's never looked normal in the comics.

Christoper Reeve, although just a puny human, just became Supes through the acting. There will never be a better Man of Steel on screen.

I don't think this new guy can do it. I'm sure the movie will be enjoyable but I don't approve of the cast.

Oh, hell yes, but when you're eight, that's the epitome of comedic genius, bested ONLY by the man rollerskating backwards when Ursula blows down the street.

They ain't cheesy, they're fun! Although the fun went overboard in the 3rd one(I still like it anyway, just for the opening comedy sequence, well and Robert Vaughn, he even made Battle Beyond the Stars seem classy... in a unclassy sort of way :D).

Anyhoo bring it on! When's it out, next summer?

OK I admit it, I love the third one as well. Specially when Supes turns bad-ass!

The scrap in the scrapyard was excellent, as were the comedy Atari 2600 sound effects the "supercomputer" made (a mixture between pacman and Star Raiders...)

3rd one is not bad at all. Will always have a place in my heart, especially the opening sequence, and its 1000 times better than the fourth.

@derbs - I think it's way too easy to be writing this guy off. Everything that has come out of Singer's mouth so far on this project show the love and respect he had for the orginal movies and for Chris Reeve. When it sounds like he's been getting everything else right, why would he get the most important bit of casting wrong? I have faith that when we see it, it will make sense.

    Did I mention they've got a CG'ed Marlon Brando for Jor-El? :D

I read in SFX magazine the other day that part of Superman 4 was filmed in Milton Keynes, explains a lot :D

They should've put braniac in the 3rd one, it was all set up for it, in a not really his origin sort of way, never stopped them before. But i remember at the time expecting the woman at the end who gets 'borg'ed to sprout some tendrills from her chin and her to head to fly off. Well there's always next time.

I think they’ve done it using the hours of cut footage from Superman 2, which apparently included a very long Kal-El and Jor-El scene.

Indeed, he doesn't even look even remotely normal in the comics, he often looks like a 'will-somebody-give-this-illustrator-a-book-on-basic-human-anatomy' sort of person.

Superman has to look fit, which this actor does, not like the Hulk in lycra.

That is a basic understanding of human anatomy but it's drawn to a style - you can't do that so much in the movies as it has to have a universal appeal and a realistic look.

I never said he should look like the Hulk but he should still be bigger than the actor they're using, imo. Supes should be muscled but not ripped but this guy looks weedy.

He's meant to be young in this one isn't he? How many twenty somethings do you know who can pass for normal with muscles the size of a superheroes, that's right... none! All the women would be chasing him around if he was built as large as the comics, no matter whether he had glasses or not. I think they've done fine, just enough muscle to be disguised under lose clothes.

Anyhoo the face is more important than the muscles imo.

None, or at least very little. It's the real Superman 3. It's called Superman Returns and is set after Superman 2, and he has been away from Earth for 6 years, and is now returning. He come back to discover a world that has learnt to cope without him, and also Lois Lane has moved on..OR HAS SHE??

How many women actually /like/ bulging muscles on a guy? I suspect not so many... anyone forumwomen disagree? Is it mostly guys that like that look?

I don't remember Reeve being ripped either and he looked fine.
