I'd like some input please.. How would you rate a club overall?

As usual we would like some help from our forumites and we're currently discussing a system that could be useful for deciding team ratings.

Team ratings will be used to tell how many 'points' a team will receive that will then be further distributed down to the footballers in each team, so that we would get a somewhat realistic version of how good a team is compared to another..

We've come up with a setup that collects the total amount of points a team has earned in the previous 5 seasons, and this is the score they got:

    (2004-2005 - 2003-2004 - 2002-2003 - 2001-2002 - 2000-2001)

    Arsenal: 83+90+67+87+70 = 397 pts
    ManUtd: 77+75+83+77+80 = 392 pts
    Chelsea: 95+79+78+64+61 = 377 pts
    Liverpool: 58+60+64+80+69 = 331pts

    Real Madrid: 80+70+78+66+80 = 374 pts
    Barcelona: 84+77+56+64+63 = 344 pts
    Deportivo: 51+71+72+68+73 = 335 pts
    Valencia: 58+77+60+75+63 = 333 pts

With these results Real Madrid would be the strongest team in Spain, while Arsenal would be strongest in England.. Do you feel a system like this would give a fair representation of a teams current strength?

One issue is with a team like Chelsea that have invested heavily in the most recent seasons. Another is Internazionale that have replaced a lot of players also - and what about Juventus for example?

Keep in mind that WOF is not trying to emulate the real world of football as accurately as possible, but still we would like to have it not too far off, if you know what I mean..

Also, for the sake of keeping it simple, accolades earned in European Cups etc. isn't taken into consideration either.. - is this wrong? (Barcelona won the Champiions League for example and dominated their league also.. do they deserve extra points for this achievement?)

As for comparisons from one league to another (Premier League v Serie A for example) - another layer of calculations will be added - so these points we're discussing here does not reflect the strengths across borders, but only in domestic leagues..

We would love to hear if you have any thoughs on this - maybe you could apply this setup to your own leagues and see if the result seems 'fair'..?

Feel free to discuss it here or at the official WOF forum:

The weighting idea is a good one. Just so long as Utd are better than Liverpool. If not, then you'll know something has gone horrendously wrong :)

Oh I forgot to add... it should be current + traditional rating.. so it shouldn't just be for the last few years.. if that makes sense..

So you sort of have a "fixed" rating based on how successful they've been overall (ie Liverpool and Man U at the top) and thats combined with the calculation above you mean? Makes sense, especially when you consider the Juve situation.

Fozzie, you can tell Ecanem is a Man U fan, they've omitted European success in the last five years just so they can come out on top :p

Hehe, no european cup results are included because this system was intended to decide domestic 'strength' only.. ;)

Yes, it was the intention that the clubs should be represented both at current strenght but also traditionally.. - but it wouldn't be fixed in the game. The use is only for having settings when you first play a league season for example.. from then on everything would be dynamic if you play season after season etc..
