Finally done with the new setup. Wall-mounted GX 77". The old bookshelf speakers + receiver made way for a Sonos Arc with "wireless" Sonos One SLs as surrounds. Also, I modified one of the cabinets to be ventilated. When one of the consoles is on, the silent fan in the back wall turns on and keeps everything cool ![]() |

Registered 18 years agoThat looks pretty fucking awesome.
Edit: will also need to ventilate an AV cupboard at some point, so tips greatly received!

Except I know the Sonos arc is wider than my alcove (and thus alcove fitting TV), which means my TV would look teeny tiny next to that!!!)

I used a Noctua 120mm fan (NF-A12x25) in the 5V PWM variant. The 5V means that it comes with a USB adapter, so you can power the fan with a USB port. Noctua makes a little thingamabob with a dial that you can put between the fan and the USB adapter, so you can decrease the rpm to a level that is silent. But that only works with the PWM variant (there's 4 variants of the NF-A12x25 in total: 5V PWM, 5V, PWM, and none).

I used an old iPhone charger to power the fan and plugged that into a Philips Hue Smart Plug, which you can turn on and off like any other Hue bulb.
I use HomeBridge instead of the native HomeKit integration of my LG TV, as the HomeBridge plugin is way more flexible. I created "wall switches" for each TV input that turn on when I switch to those inputs. And then I created an automation in the Home app to turn on the Hue Smart Plug when an input turns on.
Or you can simply leave the fan running all the time as it's silent anyway and uses practically no power, but where's the fun in that?

Sony are idiots, the PS4 Pro is the deepest console ever so I had to turn it sideways. Even the gigantic PS5 is 4cm less deep!

Yeah so the air can circulate freely. If everything works as it should, there should never be a need to open that cabinet anyway.

Registered 8 years agoHow the hell I didn't notice this bloody massive thread before, god knowns.. anyways on to business.
I've just purchased a 'budget' TV (TCL 50P615K 50 Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart Android TV with Freeview) as my previous model Samsung literally blew up but was also displaying the dreaded backlight break (same backlight issue with previous Samsung)
Does anyone here own have/any experience with the TCL's & how they perform with the consoles old and new other media Kodi etc? as I'd never of heard of them until it had been recommended by a few as an option.. but I thought what the hell cos' I just needed a telly rather sharpish and I ain't much spondulix for this kind of stuff atm.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated..

Has anyone picked up the LG C1?
I’ve seen contrasting views on whether it’s worth grabbing at today’s prices versus getting a CX.
I’ll be coming from a 6 year old Sony W8 1080p set, have sky Q and Series X to plug into it. -

Registered 17 years agoI had the option, and in the end the CX for the price I paid (~£1100) was easily the better choice. Improved black frame insertion on the C1, some nicer handling of gradients and dithering, but nothing earth shattering.
The CX is a sublime set. My whelm was slightly undered at first, likely because of how much it's lauded in this thread, but I've never owned a TV as good as this. The picture is phenomenal. The HDR is good, but takes a while to grow on you. And the VRR on the Series X is a literal game changer. I can't deal with tearing. At all. it's amazing. Even the sound isn't too shocking for a thin set like this.
If you can find a good price on the CX, there's no way the C1 is worth the premium. -

Registered 18 years agoI know what you're saying re being underwhelmed, but I think that's down to the source for the most part. Chuck the BBC nature stuff at the LG OLEDs and they absolutely shine. Others, including games, perhaps less so but I expect that to change as Devs/studios focus more on HDR. -

Registered 14 years agoIf you haven't got good 4k to feed it, it's not going to blow your socks off.
A lot of the 4K stuff I think is a decent upgrade is only marginal gains really over the Blu-ray, unless you're an ultra AV obsessive zooming in 400%.
I think the only thing my missus has seen the difference in was Gemini Man, mostly because she said it was eye rape. Oh, she thought Tenet looked good. -

It’s a couple of hundred hours of watching old now and keeps getting better. Because I’ve watched dozens of movies and episodes and played hours of games all of which look better than I’ve ever seen. And none of which I’d experienced on day one.
It was good from day one, but now it’s so awesome and I can’t believe I stuck with shitty budget backlit TVs for so long. -

Registered 18 years agoThey are stunning and agree everything looks fantastic. But they do require a good source. It also depends on what set/size you are upgrading from. 55" OLED from a 37" plasma is a big upgrade in size and a significant improvement, impressive in itself. (still have a soft spot for the Panny though) -

I’m hoping there’s enough to put through it with Netflix/Amazon/Disney and Sky.

Right?
She’s complained that we can’t see what’s going on in dark scenes in recent movies and TV shows. Would I be right in thinking that a decent OLED would improve things in that sense? -
Yes, definitely. Disney and Apple stuff looks amazing. Netflix is a bit hit and miss. They put a lot of artificial grain on a lot of their Dolby Vision stuff which I don't like, but I think that's personal preference. Don't know about Sky, imagine the Q stuff looks good though. (Nowtv not so much).
