Found this 9-minute screener of Serenity - and amazingly it runs smoothly at an OK (medium) res on my 756kb line. What gives?

Dunno. Looks pretty great - and on the high-setting (which only stutters SLIGHTLY and infrequently) it looks bloody excellent. Wouldn't mind seeing a full-length film on that - and on a 756kb line!

That is bloody nice... Isn't it pretty much an advert for that vividas program or codec or whatever it is?

Whatever, more trailers and video clips using this codec please!

This is some crazy shit - just visited Vividas.com, where they've got loads more streaming stuff.

Here's a couple of Jaguar ads. Why the hell do we have to wait eons for a crappy 480x320 IGN-vid to download when technology like this is available?!?

Bandwith most likely, we have nice fast broadband connections but to provide high quality video free of charge to a large audiance is probably too expensive for all but a few sites and promotions.

But some websites have that sort of bandwidth for streaming media (like Gamespot or Gametrailers, I'm sure there must be others) and that looks a hell of a lot better than a streaming WMV.

They've certainly got the videos but they can barely keep up with demand. Gametrailers espcailly is really slow allot of the time and some videos go down completly when new footage apears.

Well. It's just stretched full screen and probably MPEG4 of some sort like all other modern codecs. The streaming works ok, but not very unlike Quicktime or Windows Media really (they don't pre-buffer though so there's hardly any start-up delay).

The source is 24 fps film and that's MUCH easier to compress well than video. Why? Because it's got a progressive image, film has shorter focus depth than video -> less details, the image is softer and the colours often a but muted.

Feed this technology badly filmed video (as on any videogame site) and it will look like crap too.

    Whatever. This is excellent quality.

My conn is a bit above 756 kbit, and I haven't seen nice streaming like this in a long tme.

Not exactly dvd-quality, but pretty close to divx.
