Ok kids, here you go. Scroll down a bit for pictures that were taken from Nikons site (and then pulled). Seem the no 1 selling point would be the AF-system which basically is the same as on the D2X. N-I-C-E! Just wonder what kind of CCD/CMOS it will have... Bit worried about the viewfinder too, will NOT buy anything with a smaller VF than the one on my Pentax (which is much larger than on 350/20D/D70 etc).

The camera will be presented at press conferences around the world on the 1st of november.

Yes it is, and no I'm not. So what's the deal, you can buy cars, designer clothes and bling-bling, two games a week for your multiple consoles, but when someone comes along and buys a 1500UKP camera and you go "Are you rich or something?"

It's a not a P&S camera. Photography is a hobby of mine. Hobbies ARE expensive.

I can't actually see any pics in that thread :(

Anyone got a spec for it? Or a 'rough spec' that's unconfirmed but likely?

    The rumour is 10M Pixels?
$2000 with an 18-200 VR lens.
5 Pics per second speed. (That's fucking quick incedently!)
    2.5" display

    O...M....G!

/calls brother (Canon fanboy) up to tease him

Nice, can't wait for the first previews. Still, looks like the D2 x/h will remain kings of the hill for a little longer.

Yeah, I'll be very interested to see what they say in the dprevew review/preview. We're basically looking at something that's a class above the D70, but at a similar price to the 20D, right?

Completely out of my league though. Shame the D70's not due to be revamped soon.

If it has the same AF-system at half the price, I'd be happy :)

otto, you're buying lenses like there's no tomorrow! Stop it, before you have more than I do! =)

I'd love to see a test of that lens at its widest angle, both at F/4 and at F/8!

That 18-200VR looks sweet. Assuming it's not too expensive, that might be me sorted for a kit lens replacement + short telephoto, all in one package. :)

Could be, especially given all the complaints you hear about the 24-120VR's softness. Hopefully they've got their act together and come up with something a bit better than the likes of Sigma and Tamron's superzooms.

Heh, I would have done the same given the chance, but the Sigma was still a month from release when I was looking at it, and waiting would have meant not having a wideangle for all those lovely Scottish landscapes.
  • Deleted user 28 October 2005 08:37:49
Great quality, I'm impressed with the curving near the edges (pincushion is the term I think?) Also, f/8 still displayed bluriness, I guess its sweet spot is f11-f16. How much was it again? I need a good wide angle lens...

There's some vignetting in the corners but nothing PS can't deal with.

It's a pretty good price considering. I've spend thousands on gear over the past three years.

I'm going to take it out in the daylight tomorrow lunchtime, in the meantime I've taken a few test shots at 10mm in my living room - unaltered full-size images here at [link=http://homepage.mac.com/chris.kendall/.Public/sigma/f4.jpg">f4, f8, f22 (RAWs converted in CS2 to jpegs). Unsurprisingly f8 is the sweet spot with good sharpness throughout and good contrast. Very pleased with it.

Otto me old fruit (and you too Patlike)... Christmas is coming, wife wants to buy me some glass. I don't want her wasting her money.

Can you recommend 3 lenes (1 fixed!) you think I'd like to see under the tree.

Nikon camera, nothing 'rare' or hard to get hold of... Anything you like as my 'standard' lens is just that.

Anything really, Primes, super macro, fishey, 300mm zoom, 'good quality' standard general purpose zoom... Anything from your experiences really...

Anyone else want to recommend a lens please do! It's not limited to just otto and Pat!

Edit: My current 'beast' of a lens £50
    AF 28-80 f/3.3-5.6 LOL

    Sorry otto, Digital SLR (d50).

Fuck it! Sorry m8, I bet it took you ages to do all that too didn't it.

    /feels bad now.

(I'm going to read through it anyway- hold on)

Otto. I'd very closely considered that primary lens you suggested to me ages ago after seeing that pic from the Photo-gallery and your high recommendation for the relatively low price.

On the strengh of it, I also considered it more expensive brother (£219 *hand made lens* Nikon 50mm f1.4D AF) for the faster speed/lower light. I'd be very interested in your thoughts. Is it worth more than double the cost?

    --------------

I 'desperately' (ho ho!) need to get a decent 'general' zoom lens and drop kick my cheap-'o' £50 28-80 f3.3/5.6. I don't want to go nuts with the cost as it's only a general purpose lens and though something like the Nikon 18-70mm f3.5/4.5G IF-ED DX (£179) which I believe is the standard kit lens for the D70? Is it even worth it? There's a Nikon 24-85mm f3.5/4.5G ED AFS for £279 but I fail to see (on paper) why it's that much more money (lengh and speed are practically the same?!?!?!). I must confess I'm struggling at my selection of a general zoom.

the last area is a 200 (or even a 300mm) lens which i wished I had at the last racing track-day I went to. I just couldn't get close up enough to them. looking at the costs of them, I think I'm going to have to go VERY cheap (especially as I'm not even sure I'm going to 'enjoy' taking those types of photographs yet)... So maybe something like a Nikon 28-200mm f3.5/5.6G ED (£200) or a Nikon 70-300mm f4/5.6D ED (£250)

Bloody hell the conclusions we both came to is scarely!

So Yes to the slightly slower £99 f1.8 prime.
    18-70 D70 'standard' lens is a yes.

    Whatever I can afford for a 300mm :S

    Sweet...

Yeah, Used to post as Djini (Jog your memory).

Pfft. The 20D does more that five frames a second at 8.2 million pixels. You can get the body alone for about £800 now :)

    *cries*

My D100 has one... one bloody advantage over the D200: TIFF format. Never used it... *cries some more*

Anyway, if it's as close to the D2X as they say, then it's a monster.

I fiddled around with a D2H back in June, everything about it screams (((HIGH TECH))) at you. The placing of every button, the speed of the display, the granite solid body, everything is top notch. I felt like those apes around the monolith in "2001" just holding the bloody thing! :)
