Canon'll release something that'll trump this in a few months... They'll have to.

I does sound good. Like a one-up on the 20D. Still not really doing it for me over the 5D, though (12.7 megapixel and spot-metering). That 11-point AF is a real clincher, but...

    *refuses to be swayed*

Nah, plenty of life in the old D70, maybe I'll spring for the D300 for my 40th birthday. :D

I stupidly asked about a 5D when I went in to a camera shop to buy a filter last week. ERROR.

Nah, there's absolutely no way I can justify it. The 20D's fucking amazing. I'm really starting to get the feel for it now, and I really, really don't need to bin any more money on photography at the moment. Like you said, lenses are a far better investment than one-up bodies. Doesn't stop me wanting one, though :D

What I *really* want, see, is one of these...

That's right, Nikon scum. Laugh it up. It won't be so funny when Canon RULES THE WORLD.

Getting a DSLR, am very tempted by the D200 but as otto said I may be better off getting a D70s and getting a couple of sweet lenses....decisions!

Ooh wow! Like the URL for those pix - 'ottosphotos' - I wish! :D

Not something I'll ever be able to afford though. :(

On the other hand I bought one of these puppies this lunchtime. :)

    Test coming soon! :)

To be fair, I'm not going mad on lenses, this is only my...

    sixth in a year. :(

    Eek.

Mind you, I've got all focal lengths covered now, except extra-long telephoto. 10mm to 300mm in three zooms, with two portrait primes (they were cheap) and one second-hand macro prime.

    One tele-converter and I'm done, promise. :)

I can't help suspecting that you're sacrificing a lot of quality to get all that range in one lens.

Incidentally, sorry to ditch the Tokina, but it was 'Sigma today, with a slightly wider lens' or 'Tokina in a month, with shipping/duty costs'...

I'd love to see a test of that lens at its widest angle, both at F/4 and at F/8!
I'm going to take it out in the daylight tomorrow lunchtime, in the meantime I've taken a few test shots at 10mm in my living room - unaltered full-size images here at [link=http://homepage.mac.com/chris.kendall/.Public/sigma/f4.jpg">f4, f8, f22 (RAWs converted in CS2 to jpegs). Unsurprisingly f8 is the sweet spot with good sharpness throughout and good contrast. Very pleased with it.

The lens was 700 Canadian, which is what, a little under €500 these days?

The lack of sharpness at f8 there might be due to a fairly long exposure, and don't forget I hadn't adjusted for sharpness in the 'shop. I'll experiment further today in daylight.

    Nikon film camera, I assume?

Well the very first thing she should get you as a stocking filler is the [link=http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/5018daf.htm">Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 prime - under a hundred pounds new, and a really beautiful sharp lens at the perfect focal length. This would quickly become your day-to-day always-on lens (Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 - this would double up as a really superb macro lens (couple of my shots with it - 1, here to give you a feel for what's available. No no, equally applies for the D50, but then I can give you an additional couple of tips. Try to lay your hands on the 18-70mm kit zoom that comes with the D70(s). It can be found sold separately if you look hard for it (check second-hand outlets). It's absolutely fantastic.

Then, on the D50, the 50mm will actually be a good short telephoto or portrait lens, for a day-to-day prime try the equally good (but slightly pricier) 35mm f/2.

You could also ask for filters - a good circular polariser and a neutral density gradient filter will do a lot, especially if you like shooting landscapes.

Carlo, no, I don't think it's worth the double in price frankly - I haven't used the more expensive one myself but I don't think the extra couple of stops is worth it, and that's also the opinion of most of the online reviews I've read.

As I mentioned above, yes, the 18-70 is definitely worth it if you can find it being sold on its own. Really great lens.

For a long lens, my Dad gave me a cheap 70-300 Nikon zoom he'd picked up second-hand in the Far East, and it's easily good enough for my purposes. Frankly there's no limit to what you could spend on long lenses, because large apertures and anti-vibration all really help, but you have to work out what you can actually justify spending. The cheap Nikon long zoom works for me.

edit - incidentally, mate, did you formerly post under a different nick?

You're not going to get one surely? :D

Come on, if you go down that route it'll never end. I survived for years and years with an old manual Minolta SLR. A sexeh body is nice but if you're going to spend the money, better to spend it on the lenses imho.

I heard the 5D was getting mixed feedback, reason: if you use it with anything but a fuck-off ninja lens, it'll show up all the flaws and your pics'll look a bit shit. I don't know whether that's a flaw or a feature. :D
