Having just acquired Grandia this morning, and thus bought the last PS1 game that I *know* that I wanted, I would like you guys to tell me which PS1 RPG I didn't know that I wanted. For reference, I have Vagrant Story, all the Tales games, all the FF games, Xenogears, and Star Ocean 2 out of the stuff that I think might get recommended. Sorry for 'yet another RPG thread' and also for possibly setting too tough a challenge for some out there :p

Alundra and Alundra 2 both beautiful games that owe more to the zelda rpg system than anything else but the first one is one of my all time favourite tiles.

Definitely Suikoden 1 and 2. And if you're made out of money and can run import games too you should get Persona 2: Eternal Punishment and Valkyrie Profile. Kartia in case you like card-based RPGs.

And also some "almost-RPGs": Front Mission 3, Final Fantasy Tactics and Parasite Eve 2.

Suikoden, Alundra and VP are going on the list. I have FF:T and PE2. Not that fussed about card-based games (although I enjoyed Baten Kaitos) or the Front Mission series (please don't kill me). How good/what type of game is Persona 2? play-asia has a second hand copy for £25, is it worth it?

Ah yes, I think I have Chrono Cross, too. (Must root through that box in the shed)

Breath of Fire III was one of my favourites. It's getting a PSP release sometime soon, I think.

Oh my god yes (that offer is a steal!) and hurry up or Blerk'll buy it before you! It's like Shin Megami Tensei 3 (well it is a spin-off after all) but about ten times as good. One of the most atmospheric RPGs I've ever played even though the dungeons are a big letdown. Buy it now and flog it for twice that price on ebay once you're done with it ;-)

Oh and I completely forgot about Chrono Cross, as usual. Er yes, fantastic game. Buy buy buy!

Japanese version? Oh, forget it then. I guess playing Persona 2 in Japanese would be as pleasant as chewing on your own intestine.

But barring that issue (as I can read Japanese) it's well worth it? Or is there actually a difference between the JP and US versions?

Also, there is a US version on Ebay for £24.99 buy it now, if that interests anyone.

That's correct, although not by a large margin.

Anyway, Grandia should keep you busy for the next 40 hours or so, ilmaestro. It's among the best RPGs I've ever played, mainly thanks to the excellent battle system and the great characters. One thing you should keep in mind though is that when you're playing it on a PS2 the game freezes every now and then so make sure to save at every possible opportunity! It didn't ruin the game for me when I replayed it a few months ago (it only happens every three hours or so) but still, save early save often.

Ah, thanks. I may even dig out the PS1 to play it on. Also, do you know anything about the (apparent) two versions of Persona 2, Eternal Punishment and Innocent Sin? Both are listed at Play-Asia.

You speak Japanese? You incredibly lucky guy you. Eh, I don't know of any differences, but then again I don't pay much attention to Japanese versions anyway. Eternal Punishment is the only one that made it to the States so I can't tell you anything about Innocent Sin. I think there was a pretty comprehensive story FAQ for both Personas at GameFAQs which should be worth checking out.

Yes, it lends itself to excessive RPG play quite nicely :)

Thanks for the info, I'll check that out.

Legend of the Dragoon. Wonderful game from Sony.

Also, I think Koudelka is the prequel to the Shadow Hearts games.

I have a copy of Grandia, but it is NTSC.

Also would suggest Wild Arms as well and to a lesser extent Shadow Madness, Legend of Legaia.

I don't know if it counts but how about Azure Dreams.

Arc the Lad collection, specifically Arc II which is excellent! (reminds me a bit of Shining Force)
