\o/ that's enough to tempt me over there. Love german sausage (oo-er, missus). They can keep their sauerkraut through. Bleeeeergh!
Would love to go sometime and look up all the places i've read about over the years in Len Deighton's novels. -

Meat is no problem. We chose Berlin because between us we'd been to every other major european city, so seemed best to go somewhere we didn't know...
i'm not gonna see her for 5 months
so i hope its not shit. -

Registered 17 years agoThere's definetely some interesting stuff in Berlin.
Lots of museums and galleries, there's one that was really impressive but I can't remember what it was called. The zoo was pretty cool too. You should atleast check out the really tall building in the middle of Berlin (I think it's the middle anyway). You have to take a lift to the top, and there's a bar and restaraunt, with a great view! I would also recommend a boat trip down the river, it was cold and windy but I got to see lots of landmarks and such, was probably worth it!
Lots of shops, some really expensive/designer things on one of the main streets if you like that sort of thing.
Potsdamma Platz (sp?) is quite nice too, has a massive Sony building which is fun, when I was there you could go into the shop and play with the gadgets, hehe.gif)
One thing though, the metro/autobahn/train/every form of transport every created map is so confusing, I thought the ones in London were quite tough to decipher when I went down there, but bloody hell!

Registered 19 years agoThe Jewish museum? Some of the exhibits are in German (unsurprisingly) but the building is fantastic and has some really poignant parts to it.
I went a year or so ago and found all the usual checkpoint Charlie stuff was interesting to a noob like me that remembers the wall coming down but not going up. oh and the wall itself just to say you've seen it.
The Reichstag is an impressive building but not worth the queuing that we endured to get in and go up on the roof.
there are some chic bars and one that seemed to be in half a multi-storey carpark on the oraninstrasse (sp?) which was interesting -
The new Holocaust Memorial is a must.
Also, don't miss the Pergamonmuseum.
Go shopping in the Friedrichstrasse, visit the Hackesche Höfe, visit the Reichstag and the Brandenburger Tor, walk along "Unter den Linden", etc. etc. etc.
And great bars are pretty much everywhere. -

Registered 17 years agoYEah can recommend the zoo and aquarium. Another yey for Checkpoint Charlie museum. Blue Church is interesting and is right near the main shopping. Go to Ka De We, huge department store, and if meat is your thing it has a whole section of European meats, like a huge deli.
The tall tower is the Television Tower in Alexandraplatz, has rotating cafe at the top, but go early as it can get crowded bout mid day.
Best thing to do is go for a wander at night. Very lit up and nice to see. If you can get up the Reichstag do it at night. Security check is scary but well worth it. If you do Sony Center, as mentioned, is nearby and prettily lit up.
Olympic stadium is nice as well, going to be a World cup venue too. Can do tours or just wander round and if football is your thing then it is the home ground for Berlin FC or some such team.
Just came back from a trip with kids from school. Very enjoyable. -

I hate to be the one breaking it to you, but...
There really isn't anything left (well, a few pieces as a memorial). I know Berlin quite well, before and after, so to speak. You can't even see anymore where the wall once was, even if you know it. It's as if the two parts of the city have melted together. -
I should also mention that Berlin absolutely rocks.

You can in most the touristy areas, they have laid bricks into the road to show the route. Also the famous Artist wall is still there, though looking a bit shabby. Can't remember where it is though sorry. There are also random bits of wall left around, one at Porsdammer Platz underground station. -

Many pieces of the few that were left have been moved from the original locations and now stand somewhere else, but it's not like you can still visit "the wall" anywhere, it simply doesn't exist anymore, not even the gaps where it once was (and the security zone). You're right about the bricks in the road etc., but p3rks post gave me the idea he probably thinks there's quite a bit more left than there actually is.

I can second that. Excellent city and, considering it's a major capital city, suprisingly cheap! -

Registered 17 years agoI had assumed there would be something to see of it, but no big deal... From what i have read the museums etc are really good... I am interested in the history but they should have enough to keep us entertained on that front...
cool, i'm pleased its sounding like we've picked somewhere pretty good to go to, never been anywhere in germany so am looking forward to testing out my gcse german as well
"Wo is der bahnhoff bitte?"
/struggles to remember anything else
How is it for walking around? I always reckon the best way to see a place is walk it, you always find the little things you wouldn't see otherwise... and any areas that we should definitely avoid? -

Walking works well, but Berlin is pretty big. Many people don't like Berlin that much when they first visit it because it has no clearly defined "downtown" with a pedestrian zone etc. Where you should in my opinion walk around is Berlin Mitte, the Reichstag area, Friedrichstrasse, and Alexanderplatz, that area. A good tour would be from the Reichstag/Brandenburger Tor along "Unter den Linden" and "Karl-Liebknechtstrasse" until Alexanderplatz. You'll cross the Friedrichstrasse which you should walk up and down, will pass the Museumsinsel, the university, the Neue Wache, etc.
Alexanderplatz is a good destination because it's hard to miss..gif)
Bear in mind that most of that is in East Berlin, but that's a lot more interesting these days than West Berlin. The latter has the famous Kurfürstendamm (or "Ku'damm") though if you like expensive fashion and jewelry stores..gif)
As for areas to avoid, do you mean because of crime? I wouldn't necessarily vist Lichtenberg and Neukölln at night.

Registered 18 years agoHow much is a packet of Drum (tobacco) in Germany these days UncleLou? As my son is also off to Berlin tomorrow. I don't want to give him €52 (£40) for baccy as he'll spend the geld and say "I couldn't find anywhere that sold it."

I have no idea as I only smoke standard fags, but I'd guess about 3 EUR for one common packet.
Smoked them in WW2 here, did you?

And before you take the piss, I love a bit of sausage (wa-hey!), but my girlfriend is vegetarian (but does eat fish...).
Berlin's one of those places I've only ever passed through and have to get around to a proper holiday there.
Also, is the Ferhsehturm (erm, the big sharp tower with a sphere impaled on the top) worth seeing up close, or is it just something you would appreciate as part of the skyline? -

Germany is in general very good for veggie food I dare say if you go to a decent restaurant.
The Alexanderplatz, where the tower is located, is certainly worth seeing, though it's pretty ugly, and the view from the tower is fantastic. It's all a pretty good example of ugly socialist architecture, which isn't that different from non-socialist ugly architecture, though the tower itself certainly is a beauty.
I've linked to a picture in this thread, btw. -
