Registered 18 years agoAm I the only one who isnt looking forward to a more fragmented office environment where an email I send from an MS client may not work on another customers PC if they've gone down a non-MS route?
If MS start to lose significant market share, dont be surprised if that happens. Just like the IM market. -

Registered 18 years agoThey dont buy them, but because MS dont have the dominant share, they keep it closed to encourage people over to Messenger. If people start moving away from Outlook/Exchange whatever, whats to stop MS making things not work? They cant legally be forced to make their IP/software compatible with someone elses can they?
If so, then sorry to sound like Pike, but thats bullshit. Infact the whole idea they should have to open up any of their patents still doesnt sit comfortable with me. If it applies to them, it should apply to everyone. -

Dont they do viewes for pretty much everything though? They're no worse than Adobe for that, and I know a damn sight more people have the ability to edit a Word doc, or an Excel file, than have a PDF editor.
This lends itself to another problem. Data that you can't access because you can't afford to fork out for MS Office suite. It's scary the amount of companies and public service IT departments that assume you have a full Office suite.
Edit: Getting slow in my old age.

Registered 18 years agoOh and if you outsource your IT support, if your IT maintenance company is anything like mine (and if they arent a huge national they probably are), you can expect limited/more expensive/slower support than if you're Windows based company. Hell, even our Mac customers get better support than the Unix ones

Doh. Oh well, I know theres alot of swearing goes around the sales office when someone calls in with a Unix problem.
Mac *is* Unix. ;p
mouse, I think Ubuntu works really well as a solution for grannies or non-dabblers. You're right, it does start to wobble when you try to get clever with it - I had a hell of a time trying to set up Samba shares in it which is why in the end I ditched it, reluctantly. :/
I just pass the phone over if someone says they have a problem with it.

Registered 18 years agoIf you told my boss all our records were to be kept offsite and we'd be dependent 100% on another company to sort out a problem due to it being hosted offsite, he'd laugh. -

Regarding training... Everyone already knows how to use Instant messaging and gmail and google (no-one taught them, they taught themselves)... -

But isnt that what MS is doing (or trying), hence why its so big as a company?
The mega-corps may suit their present model better. No 'one solution' is available that works for everything/one.
Its the same old thing. 5 years ago we were told Linux was coming and would hurt MS. Maybe it has, but no to any great extent. -

I do for alot of them! And I'm no expert. Bearing in mind we're an IT company so most of our users are tech savvy. When I worked at the bank I had to show people where word count was, how to format, search for a word, send to multiple email address', use the calender. And yes, I had to talk someone through installing and setting up Messenger. Frightening really.
Who taught *ALL* your users Word, and Outlook? -

But why would I want to? I'm happy with Word, it works, I like it. I might pick up the basics, but my Word knowledge is a result of 10 years+ self learning. Sod starting from scratch again.
So if you have to teach them all this on word, why not on OpenOffice Writer? No different? It;'s just YOU need to learn it... and if your tech savvy, you'll pick it up in minutes.gif)
