I want to go to an EU country at the weekend but my passport expires on the 26th of January next year. I've been reading and for some reason you seem to need 3 months left on your passport but I only have 2 and half! Does this mean I can't travel? Is there anything I can do? Plese help me, I'm gutted |
Help! Can I travel?

Registered 17 years agoIt all depends on the country you are travelling to. Sometimes they insist that the passport is valid for the entire time you could potentially stay there, sometimes they don't mind as long as it is still valid on the date you plan to return. The latter is true for most Western European countries, for example France, Spain or Italy.
The best way to check is to contact the relevant embassy for the place you intend to visit first. -

Registered 17 years agoYou should be OK for inter-EU.
You can travel with an identity card normally (if your country actually has one of course) and that's no-where near as "offical" as a passport.
The 3 month rule is usually for countries where you need a visum to go in.
Which here isn't the case, you just need some prove of identitiy.
So in short. I would say you're good to go.
Of course, I could be all wrong and we won't know until you're at customs.
:-/
Sorry. -

Good point.
Google for their embassy and call them tomorrow. Best make it before noon as they can close early sometimes. -

Registered 18 years agoGoogle for the country's embassy and you will very likely find a FAQ page with exactly what you're asking.
Went to Prague in July with just a few months left on my passport, but their only requirement was that the passport had to be valid for the duration of your stay, no excess needed. -

The embassy just reiterates the 1995 Schengen Agreement, saying that I need 3 months...

Salaman, the UK's not part of Schengen so UK citizens still need a valid passport to travel into the Schengen area. Once in though no need to flash your passport about.
Yet you can fly to the UK on an ID card.
So there seems to be some flexibility for inter-EU non Schengen travel.
Good luck Rutty.

The post office will issue temporary passports no?
I really doubt you'll have a problem within the EU though using a passport with 2.5 months left. I travelled back and forth between Canada, UK and Belgium several times on my passport earlier this year with only a week or two left.
Still. If we had ID cards this wouldn't be a problem...

That's the spirit. Go for it - if it doesn't work I'll treat you to a beer by way of saying sorry for the UK's fucked up attitude to Schengen.

You need valid ID. In Britain you don't have ID cards, so the only valid ID you can use as a UK citizen is a passport.
