In every game that involves stats and numbers. I'm always the noob that kinda guess instead of checking what weapon ultimately better with what gear or summat like that.

I just had a look at the rental thingy as it sounds interesting.
I just had this nagging doubt.

    1) Buying too many games is costly, so maybe just renting a few is a good idea.
    2) paying 10 pounds a month but having to send the games you play back sounds a bit like a waste of money in the long run. Especially if you want up to 3 games on the go.
    It does add up.

I reckon if you do have a shitload of consoles though (which I don't) and you're lookign to try out nea games on 3-4 consoles + a handheld or two, it may be useful as a try before you buy sort of deal.

    So for the numbers people.
As of what point are you beter of buying than renting or renting then buying do you reckon ?

in games bought per month or money spend a month or unplayed games bought a month or Q games bought and traded back nearly within a week a month, etc.

edit: hehe meant "good" with numbers. But this version ain't too bad.

How much cash and time do you have to spend? It really depends on you. But if you have the time. Then renting would definitely get you more gaming with your money. Instead of buying a game that'll last you say 10 hours you spend 40 quid on you could have had a few months of gaming, right?

I need 30000xp to get my next level. This area has three different random encounters. One gives 125xp, one 150xp and the other gives 250xp. Thats an average of 175xp per battle. So on average I will need to fight.... 172 battles to get the level up, but I could have to do as many as 240 battles or as little as 120.

If one battle takes an average of 5 minutes to complete, (including wandering around between fights, collecting goodies, etc.), then I will on average be sat here for 14 hours and 20 minutes. However, this time could be as short as 10 hours, or as long as 20!

My question, however, is this: What is the average margin of error on this average calculation?

To answer the question: what is the aver....

I actually did a very similar calculation playing Final Fantasy 7 years ago. Everything, that is, apart from the margin of error bit. I'm not that sad.

    Good point Otto.

Idunno. I still feel like at the end of the year I'd have spent 120 Pounds on games without having a thing to show for it in the end (besides a savegame on my hard drive).

Which is odd, cuz I'm quite happy to pay every month for the use of my car, without actually owning the car, which is really the same thing.

Surely the proper criteria are 'speed at which you play a game' and 'replayability'.

If you're the kind of person who has a lot of time for gaming, and who tends to get through games quickly, then you should rent games that have little replay value.

If like me you're someone who dabbles now and then and keeps coming back to games, then buy.

If it's a game that you know is the sort of game you like and which hasn't got a clear beginning and end, then buy.

I don't think it can be boiled down to a straightforward calculation, it really depends on the game and the gamer.
