Trailers and ads on DVDs

minky just sat down to watch Revenge of the Nerds (don't ask), and had to sit through five minutes of unskippable, un-fast-forwardable trailers and ads. What the fuck is that all about? This isn't a rental disc, this is a retail DVD that has been paid for, so why in the hell should anybody have to sit through that? Scummers.

This is being played with XBMC (the DVD player that's bundled with it is pretty good these days), so I'm surprised we couldn't get past it. It's a Fox movie afaik. "Menu" or "Root menu" didn't have any effect.

after months of watching avi's on my pc i sat down to watch a few family guy dvds the other night and was amazed how long it took to actuallly watch anything

put in dvd -> watch copyright -> watch fox logo -> watch dvd intro -> select episode -> finally play episode

in used to, double click -> play, but yeah unscipable trailers seem to be creeping in a lot more

The trend that I've noticed is that the unskippable trailers tend to be on the single disc editions of films (yes I'm looking at you X-Men 2) but being honest I haven't bought a dvd in a while so I'm not a good source of info...

All Warner Bros and Disney DVDs can be skipped straight to menu, and are generally considered the Good Guys of DVDs. Warner in fact was the first one to start pricing DVDs at the more reasonable 12.99 for a new release. Good that they gave up on the rubbish cardboard cases after a while though. Universal seem to be somewhat twattish with warnings and copyrights, but usually no trailers. Fox DVDs are utter shit though, usually two or so unskippable trailers and a few warning blurbs.

Boggels the mind, doesn't it? Hmm pircay is a real issue, lets punish the people who still buy our DVDs legally. That's a really good idea and will increase sales!!!

Just remembered the single disc Shrek2 is a right twat, it's got a five-ten minute promo for Madagascar which you can only fast forward through. There is absolutely no need! And it's lost them two tickets at the cinema, and a possible DVD purchase. Bah!

I use the "title" button when I get unskippable stuff, usually hitting title 1 or 2 will get you to the start of the movie or at least the menu.

It's like the old days of VHS, you can still fast foward though.
I can understand why they put trailers on, but they shouldn't be unskipable.

If they put the trailers on as 'extra features' some people who would skip through them to get to the film might actually watch them. I sometimes do.

Is it by Buena Vista? They are bastards for it.

DVD Shrink has a nice little function that will re-enable the chapter skip for those bits, but its only going to be effective if you are copying. And I wouldnt condone that. Especially Revenge of the Nerds.
