Deadwood, yes or no? Page 2

It gets much better, the Deadwood set is a living, growing character in itself and the series takes off in quite an unexpected direction (Cylons invade).

I recently bought the first 4 Sopranos seasons on DVD, and watched them in the last few weeks (as I had missed quite a few episodes on TV), but now I am almost through, and it'll leave a horrible hole in my life.

So how do I fill this hole? How good is Deadwood? The first season is available here for not too much moolah. There are 2 threads here, but they aren't too telling.

Is it in Sopranos/Six Feet Under territory, quality-wise, meaning in "best TV show ever" territory?

Or what about The Shield? What keeps me from getting that is that the guy on the cover looks like a complete donit.

I'd say that Deadwood season One is ok, but season two for me became boring very quickly and I basically just stopped watching it.

Loved Sopranos, so recommend that. I'd also recommend 'Carnival' if we're talking HBO dramas here and I've also been recommended 'The Wire'.

Not watched 'The Wire' yet but have season one but have just finished 'Carnival' season one. It's slow to get going but is very good and looking forward now to watching season two.

Worth mentioning that you can snap up Deadwood series 1 for a tasty twee 12.99 at amazon at the moment.

Very good deal for a very good series!

Not really big on cop shows but the Shield is top notch.

Deadwood is good but I lost interest in it.

It's beautiful. Bit slow now and then, but the language is really something else. Pure poetry. And yes I'm also talking about the swearing.

Edit: oops, didn't see the other post stating the same...

I liked Deadwood but it is kind of spoiled by the way they left it up in the air after the end of series two. Things don't really finish and they are not going to make anymore series so it all feels a bit unsatisfying.

They are said to be going to do a couple of TV movies to tie up all the loose ends but who knows when they will be made and if they ever will.

I do think it was a quality series though and if you get past the swearing you actually find the dialog, story and acting is fantastic.

I think the real revelation in Deadwood was Ian McShane. I scoffed (yes, scoffed) when I heard that Sky One was airing a drama set in the wild west with Lovejoy as one of the stars, but when I watched it I was amazed. He is incredible.

Deadwood also features the greatest onscreen street fight of any TV drama, ever. Well, the most brutal at least.

Mind, this thread is from 2005 - I've watched Deadwood in the meantime, but unfortunately didn't find it that great. I found some of the actors pretty annoying, and the script and general quality never reached HBO's usual (admittedly pretty lofty) standards they set with series like The Sopranos or The Wire.

Ian McShane is admittedly absolutely great.

    :D

Just remembering Calamity Jane with her incredibly fake "drunk and stupid" accent acting in front of the fake looking set makes me want to put my foot through the TV.

That's before we even talk about the most boring main character in any TV show ever, Seth Bullock.

    The Wire FTW.

Perhaps you should try watching season three then!

And wait for the 2 two hour TV movies after that where they wrap everything up by burning down Deadwood!

I have seen series 3. I forgot what number they got up to :)

That is the series that leaves it all hanging.

    Oh! Mr Forgetful!

The upcoming* TV movies will wrap it all up for you. At least, that's what David Milch said in January.

    * I say 'upcoming', but part of me says they'll never get made now. Still, I thought the same thong about Firefly.

Yeah I have some doubts if the movies will ever get made which will make the end of series 3 a real bummer and would make it difficult to recommend anyone to start watching Deadwood if they have not already been a viewer.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Just seen all three series of Deadwood. How fucking amazing. The best series I have seen. Actors, sets, dialogue, story. Great to see Ian Mcshane in full flow with the colourful swearing.

Sorry just had to gush...just a shame they arent making any more :-(
