Anyone who doesn't like Deadwood is a cocksucking hoople-head.

For the record, they're looking at doing a couple of feature-length TV movies to finish it all off. But with an incomplete cast.

    Deadwood is good.

    However I prefered:
    Firefly
    Buffy
    Angel
    Westwing
    Heroes
    Prison Break
    24
    Alias
    Carnivale
    Scrubs

Westwing is the best series in my opinion. Did not think I would like it as I am a sci-fi fan but it is simply brilliant.

Started this yesterday. Absolutely flipping brilliant. HBO just cannot do wrong. All my favourite shows are all HBO, all of them.

Deadwood is excellent, however the third series suffers in comparison to the first two; also, due to the network canning it, it just stops rather than coming to any kind of satisfying conclusion. Well worth a watch though; Lovejoy is a revelation.

The real problem with the way the 3rd series ended is that it obviously sets up what was going to be the theme of the 4th as its cliff hanger. Power lost and reclaiming it was presumably how the 4th series was going to play out. I would guess they had no idea they were going to get canned given the end they ended up with.

Of course you can just look on Wikipedia for what happened to the various characters in real life.

There was supposed to be a film to tie up the loose ends, but I haven't heard anything about it for a while now.

I think that was just wishful thinking coming from the series creator/writer. I would presume the sets no longer exist which seems quite a big obstacle and getting the cast back together after all this time would take some doing you would think. I just donít see it happening as I believe the series was cancelled due to being to expensive to produce and I just donít see how finishing it in a mini series or TV movie changes that.

Really alarmed to see people mentioning 24 and Heroes and Lost in the same thread as The Sopranos and Deadwood. I don't get snobby about a lot of things, but when you're dealing with two of the finest TV dramas ever you really should avoid references to shallow network dross.

    /deep breath

Mad Men seems the natural 'next step' after The Sopranos. Breaking Bad needs another recommendation in here as well. Both shows are on AMC, and they're amazing.
  • Deleted user 21 June 2010 15:09:41
Whoa, no one mentioned Mad Men in this thread? It was devised by Matthew Weiner, who wrote a lot of Sopranos eps, and it has a similar atmosphere and mentality a lot of the time.
    Really worth watching.
  • Deleted user 21 June 2010 15:24:23
I would hardly say 24 (well seasons 1-5 anyway) and Lost are 'dross'.

24 is ace. Jack Bauer would cut you for remarks like that.

    Lost IS dross.
  • Deleted user 21 June 2010 16:59:47
Even if you're a big Lost apologist Ė and I've often been a big gay Lost apologist Ė the writing is on a completely different level and incomparable with episodes of The Sopranos and Deadwood and The Wire. Lost, 24 and the other major network behemoths are basically disposable high-gloss entertainment, by and large. There's no depth, and that's fine, but it's pretty wacky bringing them up when UncleLou was originally praising HBO dramas.

Like I say, I hate being so snobby about this but EG's TV taste seems a bit askew at times. Then again, the BBC has been in a state of tacky low-rent entropy for years now, so maybe that's why we think Prison Break and Scrubs deserve to mentioned in the same breath as David Chase's opus.

Sopranos... but I feel like if Deadwood ran its course it would have been right up there.

It's the "geek factor", seriously. All very intelligent people with good taste and an understanding of quality, but the mere mention of a spaceship or a fit bird in a vaguely sci-fi context and it all goes out the window.

Yep, that's bang on the money. Another two or three seasons of Deadwood and it could have been HBO's greatest achievement.

Deadwood is very good, but i'd put it behind The Wire and Six Feet Under as HBO's finest. I prefer it to The Sopranos though.

S1 was brilliant, really worth seeing and S2 is almost as good. S3 gets off to a great start but runs out of steam about halfway through and ends with a pretty unsatisfying conclusion. S3 does have one of the most brutal fist-fights you will ever see though.

However, if you've never seen The Shield you should drop everything and start watching it immediately.
  • Deleted user 21 June 2010 23:17:17
Meh, got bored of The Shield very quickly. The main characters are either a complete cunts with no likeable qualities or gormless retards. Really don't get the praise it receives. It is a very good dirty cop show, nothing more. Imo like.

I'm really enjoying this but not surprised it got stopped early. It's a bit heavy a times!
