Including a Blu-ray dirve into the ps3 is a stroke of genious on Sony's part, not a mistake.

Think about it, HDTV's are steadily gaining critical mass, and in a year or two, they're going to fall significantly in price, so that they'll be affordable for most households.

People who have only a mild interest will buy a PS3 just simply because it offers the cheapest blu-ray (Sony will sell at a loss just to get blu-ray players into people's homes), and the ability to play the altest beat-em-up or racing game.

If blu-ray wins the format war, Sony will rake in profits big time, it won't matter if game sales fall or they lose market share to the 360. Essentially Sony are betting the house on the success of Blu-ray, if it fails it could mean big problems for them though.

How can HDTV be reaching critical mass? If you read the article it actually states "Hi-Def adoption is currently at 24% and more than half of consumers are waiting for price drops".

So with a Blue Ray drive you're only appealing to 24% of the market share as they are the actual consumers that will see any really visual differences when watching Blue Ray movies excluding of course any additional content on the discs.

The technology is expensive and it is an expense that is passed on to the consumer, plus it is in no way a leap that DVD was to VHS. The price may not justify the extra clarity of picture and extra features to many consumers.

Even if the PS3 is expensive Sony will lose money on a media drive that may have the capacity but isn't necessarily the best fit for the console (i.e. at a slow 1x speed) just so they can get market penetration for their own media format.
