Sony admit it may be delayed

"We're aiming for spring, but we haven't announced specific regions," a spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment said.

They said Sony was waiting for final specifications - which are decided by industry consortiums - on some of the technology in the PS3, including that connected to the Blu-ray drive and to input and output video and sound.

"We're waiting for them until the last possible minute, but the launch could be pushed back if they're not decided soon," the spokesman said.

Yuta Sakurai, a senior analyst at Nomura Securities, said he expected Sony to try to launch the PS3 in Japan in early summer, in time for the school holidays in July.

Other analysts believe the US launch will not be until before November's Thanksgiving holiday, while a European launch is expected in early 2007.

"No one is seriously thinking a spring release is realistic any more," said Hiroshi Kamide, an analyst at KBC Securities.

Sony shares closed 3.64% down on the Toyko market. "

I seriously doubt that the ps3 will have a 'acceptable' price tag. Considering the comment about 'everyone is gonna pay the price anyway'. But then again, your guess is as good as mine atm. This discussion is a bit pointless imo (nobody knows the truth and everybody is just guessing according to their fanboy wishes).

So Sony are contradicting themselves now? One spokesman says there may be a delay and another says there won't be.

    Basically its all speculation.

Only sony truly know when it'll come out, and lets face it they will only release proper info on its release date on a "need to know" basis - so far they think we dont need to know.

Sony will release it when they are good and ready and sell a fucking shitload.

Don't know about that but I suppose it takes the rumour out of the speculation field and puts it firmly in the probable area.

Come on, everyoneknows Rueters are a fly-by-night operation and are only guessing as they aren't Sony :)

Well, Sony have about three months to finalise the hardware, produce a few million consoles and nail down a handful of games if they are going to release it in Spring. It's possible.

    Sony is t3h d00m3d!!!

Nah in all seriousness this really is not good news for Sony.
They had better get the hype engine really oiled and tuned up stuff like this can cripple a companys share price.

I am sure these negative reports only get produced to try and pressure the company in question into releasing more details.

I mean the negative report regardless of how accurate it is puts pressure on the share price which is very likely to prompt the company the report is being negative about to deny the report which to do would mean them having to release some more info.

I agree with this nice young man! The only thing about this report that is relevant is that people reading it will believe it, so Sony better get themselves organised and quick...

No, but if an article on Rueters said pouring a bucket of water on your head made your head wet I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand because I beleived my head was impervious to the effects of H2O.

As far as I've read in very recent stories, Cell is in production, RSX is in production, and I assume the blu-ray drive mechanics are probably in production.

The stuff in the Reuters article regarding blu-ray and audio/video standards is all surely software or firmware changes that could really be left to the last minute, surely?

I see no reason why hardware production couldn't be cranking up right now, with a full 3 months of efforts to produce what will of course never be enough units for launch, but what else is new.

Imagines spotty out-of-college minimum pay worker with a floppy disk in hand and a warehouse full of 400k drives!!!

Previous generally accepted cost for the Blu-Ray drive was actually closer to $100. For example The Inquirer. Just adding to the mix :-)

I asked a question about whether this was right, that's all. Why the fuck would I trust the word of a guy who can't even count?

That's a bit unfair really... people are entitled to different opinions and at no point did the guy 'really' defensive about any comments made.

The difference in price I though was due to the HDD being added which is an optional extra. But in the end of the day, analysts are often wrong but then again their sources are a lot more reputable than just idle hearsay on a forum.

    this is still all speculation.

at this stage its simply impossible to say how incredibly late and horrendously overpriced the horrendously late, incredibly overpriced ps3 will be

Who know as much about the PS3 as you or me, which is very little atm... There may be an error but that doesn't necessarily make what they have to say wrong. It will cost a lot to make and it will like previous console (excluding nintendo) sell at a loss.

They basically should have told Ken and his mates to shut the hell up until things were concrete... they just basically bigged up the PS3 and then when they were supposed to deliver they had nothing to show. That's not to say that the PS3 won't be an excellent console when it's released, but after all their bold claims and playground approach statements they have been made to look a little stupid.
