    Canon 30D

What a lame upgrade. I was really hoping for this one but they haven't even made the viewfinder larger. 20D Mk II rather than a new model.

Too bad Nikons D200 is so darn noisy, guess I'll either have to wait or raise my loan and buy a Canon 5D.

    Meh.

The in-view FEL indicator is useful, as are the 1/3 ISO increments (although I'd be interested to see whether or not those 1/3 stops were actually valuable in a "get the shot" situation). The ISO reading in-view is a major change, that folder system rids that frankly stupid filing on the 20D cards, and spot metering is another massive plus. I can't really believe that's not on the 20D. But there's no way I'm upgrade to that. It's basically the camera the 20D should have been. But then, I guess that's the point.

1Ds or bust. Sod the 5D.

And they should have definitely moved up to 11APs. There's nowhere near enough there to warrant buying it if you have the 20D. Nice touches, yeah, but if you're in the market for a DSLR I'd wait for the 30D to launch and catch a bargain as the 20D comes down in price.

Nah, TOO heavy (and expensive)! I just want a fairly sized camera with good low light performance. 5D is neat but at the same time I wish it was a bit more advanced for that price (more like Nikons D200 but with larger sensor). The (for me) ideal camera would probably be a body like the D200 but with 10MP on a 1.3x crop sensor.

The 30D looks a bit more attractive with the new 17-55mm/2.8 IS USM lens though. That could be a killer combination. Still, shame about the viewfinder.

Oh, Canon just started a new promotion with a cash back on the 5D btw. 200 UKP.

Was chatting with a pro at a press launch a few weeks ago, and he said exactly the same thing. The 20D sensor at high ISO is far cleaner, apparently.

Well I picked up a 30D to replace my D70 and really like it, colour quality is so much better too, far more vibrant. Got some shots I took last week up on my site http://www.byronhinson.com (looks dodgy on IE at the moment)

Couldn't tell you now to be honest, played with loads of settings on the D70, I still think the D70 is a good camera, don't get me wrong. I just find Canon's latest models to show colours better, might just be a personal opinion though.

Wouldn't that just be because of the Canon "picture styles", ie you're using some kind of post-processing in the camera?

The D70 pictures always look a bit dull, straight out of the camera, but as I understand it, that's just because it tries to deliver a neutral, conservative picture for the post-processing on the computer.

On a sidenote, otto, do you happen to know anything about a D70/D50 successor?

I am sharing the D70 with the girl-friend, but I am starting to want one all for me alone. ;)

I don't think picture styles were on the Canon 350D as well though were they? and they produced better colours by default over the D70 too. I could be wrong again there as the 350D is my mums!

The 1Ds is a great camera but the LCD is very poor and it's quiet heavy. As a pro camera it's hard to beat. I haven't seen a 5D yet but on paper it looks to be a very fine camera.

I took almost 4000 pictures with my new 5D this weekend. Will post comments and examples later this week. There are some weird Canon-stuff that I don't like, but the AF and exposure seems to be spot on compared to my Pentax gear. Like a giant point-and-shoot :) (my arms are still tired from holding the 5D with a battery grip and a Canon 70-200/2.8 L-lens)

Looks like Sony have already made good use of the Konica Minolta system here. There are some interesting lenses on that accessory list that should fit my KM 5D.

Ah yeah of course, you're a high ISO specialist.

    In which case, yeah. :/

No, but then I'm not especially plugged in at the moment, I haven't been hanging out on the photo sites for a while. When's Photokina?

Nikon are considered to have a slightly different policy to Canon, though - sticking with a single model for a longer cycle, releasing incremental updates. The D70/D50 aren't *that* old, yet... Though with the explosion in the DSLR market, maybe they'll feel the need to do something at Photokina, I dunno...

Actually, Lou, rich lawyer like you, get a D200! :D

The D70 (and I believe the D200) offers sRGB and Adobe RGB in-camera. sRGB is bright and vivid, Adobe less so but it's a much larger gamut and offers greater detail for post-processing. And obviously RAW is going to look dull straight off the camera, that'll be true for any manufacturer.
