I have 300+ photo files in Nikons .NEF format, basically I want to quickly convert them to JPGs so I can audition them easily.

I have tried using a batch action in Photoshop but this requires me to hit OK on every file....

Does anyone know of a way to either audition NEF files in Windows or to quickly convert a whole folder to JPGs?

    Any help greatly appreciated!!!

What version of Photoshop do you have?

If you have CS2 then there's a facility built in that does exactly what you want.

If you have CS1 then you can download the exact same function from Dr Brown (mad geezer who works at Adobe and knows Photoshop like the back of his hand, and runs a really fun tutorial site).

If you have a previous version... I'm not too sure.

    yeah it's PS7.0 :[

So CS2 actually lets you do this? as in preview them without having to load them in individually?

    Cheers.

It sure does. In fact, CS1 lets you do that too, in the File Browser feature.

Can't you view your NEF files without having to convert them to JPG first? On my Mac I can open NEF files to view them in Preview (a graphics viewer app) with no problem, without ever having to open Photoshop.

I came to Photoshop at CS level, and in that version you could download Dr Brown's Image Processor from Russel Brown's Tips & Techniques and load it in Photoshop as a Javascript or something. It allows you to mass-convert one file format to another without having to Okay each one. It was so popular that Adobe incorporated it directly into CS2 (Russel Brown worked for Adobe on Photoshop from the very very early days I think).

If all you want to do is view your NEF files there must be a way of doing so on a PC without needing to use Photoshop. I don't know much about PC operating system versions and how they work. All I know is on a current Mac you can look at NEF images even in the desktop browser...

yeah that's the problem I'm having, I can view the thumbnails but not the actual files, it's really annoying to have to use the Nikon program or painstakingly load each one in to PS7 in order to say "yeah it's nice" or "no it's rubbish"...

If anyone knows how to preview NEF files in windows at a reasonable size please advise!

cheers for your help so far!

Cheers mate that site is great, going to watch some more tutorials...

BTW XNView (a freephoto browser) was recommended to me and I have to say it solved all my problems, it recognises NEFs and displays them as thumbnails or as previews which you can view at a decent size...

thanks for everyones help, much appreciated!
