HDD mandatory for games but may not be included?

This must be a mistranslation/mistake surely? According to gamespot the PS3 will require a HDD:

Kutaragi also made it clear that the hard drive will be necessary to play games--Sony is telling developers to make games assuming every PS3 has a hard drive installed. "We view the Hard Drive to be mandatory for the PS3," he said. "Rather than have developers create games for the PS3 with or without the HDD, we will be asking them to develop games as though all PS3s have the HDD installed."

but it may not come as standard :

However, Kutaragi revealed that Sony had not decided whether or not the PlayStation 3 would come with the hard-drive pre-installed. "We might end up installing it in all PS3s, though that depends on the market," he said. This raises the possibility that the PS3 could be sold without a piece of hardware needed to play PS3 games--in effect forcing consumers to buy a peripheral for basic functionality.

    That would be insane!

(apologies if this was mentioned on the other thread - I couldn't see it)

Edit: added link to other thread. And the title should be "HDD" - not talking about HiDef. Sorry.

Maybe they think they can sell a hard disc less version for people who just buy a PS3 as a media player?

Either that, or it's a sign that there are no *good* games available at launch, so peope won't be needing the PS3 just yet, but you can buy one in advance and buy the HD whenever the first PS3 game worth buying is released.

Why do the sell the PS2 without a memory card? Its pretty much essential but it means they can sell the console relatively cheaply and have a huge mark up on the memory card.

    From IGN:

Earlier, we mistakenly reported that Sony would including the hard disk with the PS3 right out of the box. Kutaragi actually stopped short of confirming this, leaving it as an area of speculation for now. He did state that Sony hopes to avoid a situation where some systems have the drive and others don't (Kutaragi didn't mention Xbox 360, but he was probably thinking it).

i've seen reports stating that it does come as standard and ones that don't depending on the sites you go to, so think positive it will come as standard. Or just wait for the keynote speech at e3.

True, but the HDD will be a lot more expensive.

    £60 for a 60GB 2.5" drive at the moment.

I'm thinking... nay, hoping... that the confusion may be due to it being an upgradeable peripheral. I mean, how do you split bundles for those who want the minimum 60Gb drive for gaming, those who want a 300Gb for media storage and homebrew, and those who want the cheapest BluRay on the market that doesn't need an HDD?

I'm not sure how they will play this one. And I'm not sure they do either.

    Couple of quid.

I could not find a 20G drive but a 40GB is around £40 so thats quite a mark up by MS.

Actually that makes sense. I wonder if it will be possible to buy a 20Mb drive, crack the case open and replace it with a bigger one?

IF (if if if if) the PS3 is going to have Tivo functionality, then I want a very large drive.

Oh, you are a joker, aren't you? ;)

Like Sony will allow that. Look at what they're doing on the PSP.

They'll be some way to prevent that, even from the Linux it 'supports'

If it's mandatory then it has to be included, surely? Memory cards are not included with PS2s, but you can still use the PS2 without one (as pointless as that would seem).

I was surmising it'd come with a standard unit and other 'larger' units will be available to buy separately or as part of more expensive bundles.

But you can't flog something without a bit of kit that is required before you can even use it. That's like selling a car with no wheels.

Mods, please 'fix' the subject. HDD, not HD.

You're probably right frod. Wasn't it nice when the primary aim of games consoles was games?

Just because he's asking them to assume it will have a harddrive, its not the same as using it though? Otherwise there'd be no crossplatform titles.
