Registered 17 years agoWell, I should come clean and admit to having at least 200 quid in oils and vinegars sitting in my kitchen cupboards. It's not treating yourself to something expensive that bothers me, it's the baseless snobbery that people project.

Registered 17 years agoWell, I'm the type of person who makes their own pasta and has spent £50+ on a bottle of olive oil. Why? Because it has its uses. I only spend £4-5 on a bottle of wine though.
I don't cook because it's trendy, I cook because it's a neccessity for life and I give the highest flying frack about what I eat. I also buy ready made pasta as I know of it's virtues. I've also been known to gorge myself on the biggest donner kebabs and other processed foods. I eat all things in moderation, it just so happens that 99% of the time it's all fresh and non-processed.
I've cooked since the age of 7 (and younger I'm told). I've eaten most things that have been given to me and I actively search out more and more obscure ingredients. I get most of my thai ingredients from thailand and source my spices to their origin (from around the world) as I know how much goes into grinding and mixing down the contents of the packets that you buy in supermarkets.
Where did it start... Seeing my mother make chapatis every day of her life after working 10-12 hours in the day, she still had time to come home and feed a family of 6 for pittance with only fresh ingredients. Seeing my uncle bringing home the fish he had just caught and teaching me how to rip open their stomachs and feel their guts pouring out into your hands.
My girlfriend can't cook and knows very little of food. I let her eat pizza hut pizzas once in a while as that is what she likes even though I make my own dough and pizzas (though I don't spray that last bit of fat from a can that all pizza places do to make the pizza glisten - trade trick no 1). It's a constant education for her. And it's one that I delight in. I enjoy giving her something rancid and other worldy as I can see what I must have gone through the first time I tasted something different. Quelle surprise when she actually enjoys it, well, most of the time anyway. What you put in your bodies has a huge effect on what you do, physically and chemically.
And it doesn't matter if you buy a bottle of oil for £2.50 or £250, it's what you do with it that counts. I'd much rather share a meal with somebody making honest to god food, enjoying it and telling me how their day was than eating truffles with Tarquin and discussing the virtues of a better standard of life and why the truffles aren't as good as the caviar last week. (which, by the way, are both delicious and have their uses like all food) -

Your body is rejecting the good food due to your bodies' reliance on foods high in trans fats or sugars for a 'quick fix'.
It happens to everyone who tries to switch to a healthier lifestyle from a life of crap, but it does go away if you persevere. I went on a detox for a week, and I felt like shit all week, before having total euphoria afterwards.
Still 'on the wagon' and enjoying more energy, and a healthier skin / hair / etc.

Food is food is food is food.
Not everybody is the same, it affects people differently. To say that food is healthy and then has a negative effect is wrong. I understand where your coming from though (correct me if I'm wrong), you mean healthy as in looked upon as being healthy in the mainstream.
People have different reactions to everything so not all food is healthy for you. It's just food, hence my comments on the physical and the chemical. (which I think we've mentioned previously in a thread of yours and one you already have an understanding of)
I follow the chinese/asian principle of hot and cold foods. Not hot as in temperature but hot as in what it does to your body. I've also followed the idea that I know best what I want, not the mainstream. Hence why I don't consider myself a ponce but still would spend ridiculous amounts of money on a food product.

Irregular eating patterns & stress - do you have a high-pressure job or something?
I used to 'graze' when I was working (i.e. eat a little, often - whatever took 5 minutes maximum to prepare and eat). Now I'm semi-retired I've made more time to eat, and bizarrely, I eat way less than I used to (but more of the good stuff, I hope). -

Registered 17 years agoI'm not the greatest wine drinker and have found some great bottles of plonk for a couple of quid that'll do me well. I also only cook with cheaper flavoursome bottles and as I burn off the alcohol you don't want to spend to much. I have spent a couple of quid extra on one that I had to make mulled wine with, a spicy south american. I do spend a bit more on spirits as purety is a neccessity when it comes to drinking those, and the flavour they impart in food is more distinctive than it is with wine. (eg vermouth for rissotto, I try to get my hands on noilly prat)
Oil on the other hand I use everyday for all sorts of cooking (so have different sorts for different dishes) and went to a press where they make the stuff up to your requirement. Hence I got the cream of the crop which taste and texture was out of this world but was bloody expensive. Worth every penny though... -
