Actually, bugger the online stuff - this is the most interesting line:
"the firm has confirmed that the PS3 will be able to boot games directly from its hard drive"
Built-in and fully official HD Advance? That'll hopefully work for PSOne and PS2 games too? \o/ -

Not sure if thats good or bad - or just going to lead to confusion. -

I hope this isn't the case. What kind of infrastructure and support could they offer for free?
IMO, £40 (or a free game!) for the Live! service is PERFECTLY acceptable, given the level of service given.
/thinks back to laggy-as-fuck SOCOM games on PS2
/dies a little inside -
which will be co-created by Sony Online Entertainment (creators of the Station.com system used by games such as Everquest, Planetside and Star Wars Galaxies) and GameSpy.
Its doomed, unless Sony are just trying to get SOE and Gamespy in a room together so they can use some sort of orbital weapon to melt them as an act of goodwill to online gamers, I hold out little hope

TV over IP?
You certainly wouldn't need a Microsoft media server anymore. -

Registered 18 years agoDefinetly a wait and see. Could be a mess or good.
I think there is little too much, let the publishers do what they like.
Only thing wrong with Microsoft's service is lack of dedicated servers and not enough standards. Some devs really are quite clueless to what a good online setup actually is.

Registered 20 years agoUm, should someone point out that the PS2 had online gaming and that you didn't have to pay for that service?
Don't see that it should be any different for PS3, and it certainly doesn't seem to have hurt MS.
Given that live is frickin brilliant and the PS2 online experience was a pile of shite. -

Aw! Don't spoil it! I was getting interested in something.
And probably only downloaded, DRM encrypted games, at that.

Doubt that. -

Me too. They've never quite managed 100% compatibility, although they have been pretty damn close. There are always exceptions.

Registered 19 years agoI also liked the bit that said
"This opens the possibility that game publishers could charge their own fees for playing games, which is indeed likely to be the case for titles such as massively multiplayer games - a genre which will be well-served by Sony's more "hands-off" approach to the network service, since some MMOG publishers have opined that Microsoft's approach is too restrictive on their business models."
So I doubt it's going to be free for AAA titles -
Ginger wrote:
I disagree - I think 'normal' games will be free. Start charging for online play and people just play other games which don't charge. Only MMORPGs can get away with subs fees.
So I doubt it's going to be free for AAA titles -
