Registered 19 years agoCasio Exilim EX-750 for me.
It's only got a 3x optical zoom, but it's small, portable, well designed, simple to use, feature packed, with a battery that lasts for ever. Oh and it takes excellent pictures too..gif)
Seriously, it's easily the best compact cam on the market. Should be well within your budget too.

Registered 20 years agoS2 IS is supposed to be one of the best with that type of zoom capability. 12 times iirc. Only other one I saw vaguely recommended about the same price was a Panasonic.
I was going to get one to go along with my Canon a270(?) which is a normal size compact digital camera.

Well, not to disagree with otto who knows waaaaay more than me, but from the point of viwe of another noob I too have an Exilim and have found it to be excellent. I actually chose it over a Cannon in the end too. -

Registered 18 years agoAgree with Otto, i used the sites he mentioned to narrow down my range of cameras to the fuji f11 and the canon powershot A620 which is the one i ended up buying. Only a 4x optical zoom but i like it, my friend has the Canonn S80 which is an excellent camera but out of my range and only 3x optical zoom. Digital zoom is poo, ignore it.
Check out steves site and dpreview, they do comparison tables.

Registered 17 years agoI got an A620 too. Had an A70 before that, and it was great too.
A610 is about £50 cheaper, for the loss of a couple of megapixels and a remote shooting mode.
Thing I like about them is you can point and shoot if you like and get good results, but if you wanna get geeky, you can alter loads of settings - most of which I've still not played with (ISO settings).
My 2p.
EDIT: Both purchase off the back of Steve's Digicams reviews, btw. Chose batteries based on recommendations too.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Have looked on those websites, thanks Otto, it does look a good bet. I'm probably never going to use 90% of the functionality it has, but I have a background in video, have a fairly solid hand with that (and know how shit digi zoom is) but never really done stills photography.
The Canon looks a bit chunkier, and I have videographer's hands, which pretty much makes me used to bigger cameras with a big zoom.
I will look at others that have similar bodies, thanks for the help, seems that camera got good reviews though. -

Sorry, helpful post this time, can I suggest a read of dpreview.com and steve's digicams? Sorry to disagree with Mike but Casio are not exactly a well-known camera brand whereas Canon are, the Canon you're talking about looks a very good bet to me.

I'm not saying Casio are duff, I'm sure it's a great camera, but I'd question the statement that it's "easily the best compact on the market" is all. .gif)
When it comes to cameras you're usually safe going with the companies who have an established track record. The key bits are the lens and the sensor, and Canon do both, very well. Any fool can bung in the electronic gubbins. ;P
Oh and then there's the question of the optical zoom. Seeing as it was the single criterion mentioned, that kind of rules out the Casio. Again, the Canon should be a good bet as you'd need a decent lens to take advantage of 12x.
