Probably old. Do I care? No. Here's the link: LINKY ...and upgradeable if you can't be bothered to read it. This is why the HDD is classed as a peripheral, not a built-in component, and why confusion as to whether it would come in-the-box ensued. Edited by Stormflood_UK at 19:44:54 17-03-2006 |

Registered 16 years agoI think it's a tad extreme to think a games console would be shipped that wouldn't play games.
Sure, you had to buy memory cards for PS2 to save games, but the damn thing still played games. The 360 core system requires memory cards without an HDD, but it can still play games without the peripheral.
Believing that even Sony, no matter what your hatred for them, would ship a completely non-functioning games console is utterly ridiculous.

It'll cost a fortune with a HDD, but it would give the PS3 a big advantage in the eyes of developers, the xbox having the HDD as an extra was (and still is) a really fucking stupid idea, next to the Wavebird not having the rumble feature, it splits the userbase and restricts what you can do as a developer. -

Registered 16 years agoYup that really was a very stupid idea by MS and I still don't understand their reasoning.

Very good point. Nice way of pointlessly hobbling the (already potentially underpowered) 360 there, MS.

I know, but that wouldn't make them unplayable. It would mean they load slower and you wouldn't be able to save, unless we're installing console games now?

That's hardly ambiguous.
I thought the quote was quite ambiguous.
Wasnt it "We are telling developers to work on the assumption that a hard drive will be present". -

You could interpret that as them saying "If you want to make a game which needs the HDD, or will take advantage of it, go right ahead, we dont mind either way". -

It sounds very up in the air from that account of it. Have to wait till it's all clear and out there I suppose. -

Not necessarily. MS meant that they won't allow devs to make games that require a HDD to work.

Sony posibly means that they WILL allow devs to make games that need a HDD to work - but that doesn't mean that the HDD will come with the standard PS3.
I still think you're right, tho.

Registered 16 years agoI think a few people here are forcing ambiguity upon anything Sony says. Sure, I can understand sniggers when Sony claim the PS3 will be more powerful than all the gods and make us question reality as we know it, but when they tell devs to create games for an HDD-equipped console, and say it will come in-the-box as standard, where the fuck is the ambiguity?
Meh... looks like MS have succeeded in making us all believe they never bullshit, and that Sony never speak the truth. /slow clap -

As much as I'd love to believe this is true, 1) It's Yahoo reporting this and 2) the only source we have to go by is a "sony representative" which, for all we know, could be some intern who's hearing info from other dubious sources.
When kutaragi, harrison, or someone else higher up confirms it then that's when i'll be relieved. -

Registered 18 years agoWell considering they're trying to out-do MS wherever they can then this makes perfect sense.. also i assume they're hoping drives will continue to drop in price. Gonna be a very interesting christmas for gamers.. again!! -

They also say it's upgradeable which is another bonus. -
I'll wait till the official pricing before taking what anyone says as a spec for granted. It would not suprise me if SCEE just assumed like everyone else had from Kens speech rather than getting proper confirmation from Japan - and even if they did are they 100% sure?
The HDD seems like too nice a bit of kit to drop the potential profit on that selling it as a option would provide.
