    Another thoughtful rant from The Inquirer
  • Deleted user 22 March 2006 13:01:09
    Article has some interesting points, and I agree that PS3 can't lose outright, but I don't think it can win (as thoroughly as it did with PS2) either...

    A load of waffle surrounding a obvious and almost certainly true claim that 'they have a huge PS2 install base waiting for the PS3".

    Just look at those Xbox 360 sales figures which are good but do not reflect any mass desertion.

    Indeed. Microsoft have a 'quite nice' head start, but the war doesn't start until all the players join the game. And given figures so far, it appears that most people are happy to wait.
  • Deleted user 22 March 2006 13:09:59
    However, the 360 could lead until 2010, at least in the US, despite the PS3 outselling it every year after 2006.

    Will that still be true in 12 months time Blerk? Will folk still want to wait as the summer comes to an end and the weather returns to its dreay normalcy?

    /does not buy suimultaneous release 'concept'

    (Fixed). I agree. That is what Sony does best. Did anyone see that IGN face to face argument thingy, where the IGN tech-guy and the IGN PS3-guy argued about PS3?

    The tech-guy pwned the PS3-guy, and still, the moderator said that the PS3-guy won the debate and should be given the last word... PS3 fanboys live a lot further away from reality than their Nintendoid or XBOXen brethren.

    Summer sales are likely to be rubbish as they always are, so I'd be guessing that Microsoft's best chance to grab a huge chunk of sales would be to fire off a fantastic Autumn line-up before Sony gets a chance to launch. And by 'fantastic line-up' I mean 'proper 360 games', not 'PS2 games with shinied up graphics'. Stuff to make you need a new machine.

    It's not going to be easy for them with the Sony hype-machine in full flow, though. And there's always that little fly in the ointment called 'Nintendo', who may well try to beat Sony to market.

    The article's central theory is total bollocks. Arrogance was the downfall of Atari, Sega, IBM, Commodore, 3DFX, Apple post/preJobs and countles other companies just in the entertianment electronics sector alone.

    I don't think a lot of people realise that the 360 has a lot of advantages:

    1) A lot earlier to market;
    2) A more attractive machine;
    3) The best conventional controller (or so it is said);

    4) Second tier 360 titles to compete with First tier PS3 titles;
    5) No significant graphical difference between the two;
    6) 360's LIVE service will go unchallenged;

    7) BLU ray drive may be incompatible with many existing HD TVs, owing to the cable standards or something (or so the IGN Tech guy said)...

    Of course they can lose, historys shows that any console to reach critical mass (normally around 20 million units) first always goes on to be the overall winner. IF the xbox can sell 20 million before the PS3 is released, they've won it by default :D

    None of which are very exciting. Talk to me about games, man. That's what'll sell me a next-gen console.

    Agreed, though I do feel that, aside from a few exceptions, most second tier 360 titles will be ported PS3 titles (or vice versa) :)

    It's kinda like what you'd get if a quality newspaper like "The Sun" started to branch out and report on tech stories.

    The 360 needs a "Halo". Not necessarily "Halo 3", you understand .

    Just one game that makes any half-interested gamer screw up their face as they try to continue walking past a game-shop on a Saturday after payday because they know they can afford it, they've played THAT game on a friend's system, seen the advert, read the 10/10 review(s) and can't fight the urge any more . . .
    "And I'll need an extra controller. And I'll buy Ghost Recon as well, just for a change of pace . . ."

    It's just a question of whether THAT game is released in the next 3 or 4 months giving MS half a dozen paydays before PS3 and Christmas. It's like the DS/PSP thing all over again.

    As Blerk said it should really be about the games (at the moment there is no JRPGs that or other games that interest him on 360 so he won't get one). There is however a huge Playsation brand factor to be taken account of, some people would buy one if you dressed up a shoe box and branded it Playstation. This however could very well be killed by the price of the PS3 if it's too high.
    From a publishers perspective they will go with/give preferential treatment to which ever one has the largest market penetration (unless one of the platform holders gives em wads of cash). In this generation that was PS2 in the next one god alone only knows maybe it will be fairly even.

    Games don't sell systems anymore! Just look at the Dreamcast!

    Even if the 360 had a Grand Theft Auto AND a Halo it would still NOT WIN! Why? Because the 360 isn't cool in joe blogs eyes! Microsoft is 'geeky' to many people and Sony are 'cool'.

    Why do Ipods sell more than the better (and cheaper) Irivers? Because Ipods are 'cool'.

    When MS make their consoles cool, they may win the battle but not with the 360...

    I think you're mostly right. If you hype what you've got properly, you can sell just about anything. Look how many copies of Halo sold FFS!!!
