Registered 16 years agoYeah my friend was talking about this on the bus back from college today. Good post! But still, it's to be expected- I mean some of the current 360 looks shite, so I'm sure some of the PS3 launch games will also look shite. However, some will look great too! I can't wait until in-game graphics can match that pre-rendered stuff! -

Registered 17 years agoIt's nearly impossible to match the pre-rendered stuff. Its not only in-game graphics that improve you know!
Take a look at in-game graphics now and look at some pre-rendered stuff from 10 years ago.
This post is obvious but it's funny

Registered 18 years agoIMO in-game is surpassing pre-rendered in a way.
In-game graphics on some 360 games have freakishly high frame-rates (in comparison to their 30 fps intros for example) as well as better clarity than 'soft' / blurry video sequences.
I was playing DOA4 on a 360 the other day and the crispness of Jann Lee's arms when he does his winner pose is insane - especially in comparison to some of the movie footage at the start of the same game. Anyone who's seen this on a decent HD will know what I mean.
Obviously some elements of pre-rendered graphics are better - but lets not overlook how far real-time graphics have come! -

1080p on the PS3 - remind me, are Sony still claiming this'll be standard? If that were the case (and it was true, unscaled 1080p) wouldn't it make the power between it & the 360 marginal (if there is a perceived gulf in power) given that it'd effectively be over twice the resolution (in total pixel terms), meaning an inevitable downgrade in texture quality blah blah to allow such a high resolution?
/doesn't really care, buys all consoles for teh gam3z
/knows next to nothing about graphics tech

Registered 16 years agoMeh, it's to be expected by alteast some parts of the comunity. Same happened with the 360 or as was then dubbed the 1.5.
Obviously games in early development are going to look a bit cack, but I do wish that Sony and MS to a lesser degree, would stop bullshitting the consumer with all these pre-rendered short-films. They stopped advertisers from doing it on TV so why are the big companies still allowed to get away with what boils down to basically conning the general public?
After all the false promises about the PS2 and it's still being done :/

What were those false promises? The PS2 achieved everything they said it would.... eventually. -
Nevermind that link, the fact is that Sony have a proven track record of over-hyping their games and advertising using FMVs. I think that PS3 games will (eventually) look very very nice, but never as good as Sony would have you believe...
What's really appauling is that nobody is angered by their OTT advertising. -

Registered 16 years agoSo it was twice as powerful as the dreamcast was it?
The emotion engine would be able to render toy story like graphics would it (although MS also made this claim I think)?
There were many ludicrous claims made about the PS2 and the general public seemed to drink them all in deeply. Where do you think 'Mad Ken' got his nickname from?
