As I sit here munching my bombay mix (Marks & Spencer's, actually quite nasty - for the record), I am surprised to find, in and amongst the assortment of sub-par maizey goodness, a healthy helping of not just cashew nuts, but also pistachios! Surely a novelty item in a bombay mix... and I do consider myself something of a conoisseur ;-)

Delighted, I start to wonder: which is my favourite nut? And I find myself posed with one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to face.

    Cashew... or pistachio...?

    Pistachio... or cashew...?

Both equally as moreish, both having a perfect consistency - both also completely worthless without a light salting. Pistachios have the quirky challenge of shell-removal; cashews the endearing bisection of the (correct me if I'm wrong) cotyledons into two shiny-smooth halves... it really is a conundrum. I cannot picture my life without either.

Torn, I turn to my fellow forumites to impart their wisdom. Am I making some crucial oversight in my evaluation of the duo? Or, indeed, can you think of a challenger to the almighty cashew-pistachio pair?

Marks and Spencers await your conclusion with bated and foul-stenching breath...

Thanks to Seinfeld, I now know that a Cashew is actually NOT a nut. It's a seed!

    Sorry Prof. ;)

Paranuts are clearly the best nuts.

Pistachios are good, but I just can't get the shells off in time to keep up with my overactive mouth.

Cashews are delicious, but make me feel sick after too many.

Based on this evidence, dry roasted peanuts are clearly the best. They are easily accessible and I can eat bag after bag (washed down with an ice cold beer).

Hazelnuts and raisins is an unbeatable combination.

A few years ago my mum chewed on something a little 'rubbery' whilst eating a bag of Bombay Mix.

It was a chunk of skin from somebody's THUMB! True story. :)

She was advised to cut the hideous chunk of yellow in half, and then to send half to get it tested and the other half to the company that made the bombay mix.

I have no idea what happened after that, but I'm pretty sure they sent her a measly £200 in compensation.

So think about THAT when you're digging into that bag of Bombay Mix.

Macadamia is considered the king of nuts by many. I prefer pistachio.

Pistachios. Although I can't discount the humble peanut's contribution to peanut butter M&Ms.

    mmmm

Little 'disaster' dating story - I went on a date once with a woman quite a lot older than me - she was hot (although this thread is useless without pics). I wanted to impress her, so I took her to a really good Indian restaurant.

We had to wait for a table, and as we waited, she started munching on this stuff in a bowl. She was very polite, didn't spit it out, but was in quite a bit of discomfort, at the disgusting taste of the 'Bombay Mix'.

A waiter appeared, and said "Makes the room smell good" - it was pot pourri.

Later on, I found her lack of a sense of smell wasn't just confined to foodstuffs.

Unsaturated fats*, which, as anyone other than 'Dr' Gillian McKeith will tell you, are very good for you in moderation. Especially as most nuts contain linoleic and linolenic acids, which are very good for hair and skin.

    * - raises high-density lipoprotein, aka 'good' cholestorol, that can lower your 'bad' cholestorol.

    So nuts are cool.

Someone's done an A level in biology recently... ;-)

Truk, I'd imagine that 'too much' is once you've eaten enough nuts to no longer be hungry. In otherwords, try never to sate yourself with nuts :-)

No, I'm the only male nutritionist in the known universe. Although I do work for a football team, so perhaps that's slightly less gay.

I can't breathe properly if I eat nuts and usually vomit quite badly too.

Therefore I do not have a preference.

Certainly a highlight of the esteemed Bombay Mix.

I can only assume the brands you've tried are absolute guff, by the way.

Nowt wrong with most bird food, pretty healthy stuff.

Those work conferences must be ace! ;)

My college courses certainly are. Next only to health & beauty courses.

However, Dietician Law states that, once women qualify, they turn into overweight sourpusses. Not sure how that happens.

Not really sure how people deal with taking dietary advice from porkers, either.

Honey glazed/roasted peanut, or the "hot nuts" you find in certain pretentious pubs.
