Its all in the manual that came with the game. But in case you've lost it or something, to get your friend code you go into the gatehouse and talk the Copper (the dog on the right hand side). Once you have your code you need to exchange it with a few people and arrange to go to their town or have them come to yours'.

I've got an American mate with this game, but the US version, obviously. Will they be able to link up with me, do you know? He reckons the US version can't link with the Euro.

All regions can link via wifi - you shouldn't have any problems meeting up with your friend.

Yep Prehensile_Plant, filip is right. I have the US version (but live in the UK) and have successfully liked up with the EU one (Over Nintendo WiFi Conection, that is. Never tried local, but I imagine that would work too).
