Swiit, actually that name would work better than the one they actually chose. :)

"Plug your wand into a vagina" might just have worked as a slogan as well.

It's better than VG Cats. Although that isn't saying much these days. :(

    Erm... What do you mean?

I've made at least two wii jokes today. And I've said that I don't like the name.

Maybe you feel the need to have everyone put firmly in one corner, but I'm really not in any of those corners. No matter how hard it may be for you to believe, I say what I think and I avoid letting fixed ideas get the better of me. Of course, nobody is perfectly balanced, but I do try.

But if calling me a Nintendo fanboy makes you feel better...

May I ask how many people will actually change their mind (if they were planning to buy a REV) because it will now be called Wii? Nobody? Oh... :)

Exactly. Most people are letting loose and having a giggle with puns and the like. I'm still gonna get one. It's only taking the pi-, sorry, mickey. :)

Yeah but they're trying to convince non-gamers to dabble into it. Calling it this isn't going to help in the UK at least

The thing I don't get: Wii = We = community.

Aye, in fucking English. What about the few hundred languages out there where it means nothing of the sort?

I asked in the comments thread (god knows what possessed me) not long before Khani did, actually.

What exactly does 'Wii' mean to your average Japanese/Indian/Spanish/Turkish gamer?

Nintendo's reasons for naming the console 'Wii' completely break down.

Who cares? In the first and third largest game markets it means piss what it means in Dirkadirkastan is an irrelevance.

The Xbox isn't named that for any particular reason, though...

It's like the joke in Die Another Day that I saw in German. The joke goes...

    "I'm Mr. Kill"

"Now there's a name to die for!" Ho ho.

But in the German dub, it goes...

    "Ich bin Mr. Kill"

"[insert German for "Now there's a name to die for!" here]"

Now... wait a second... that joke means nothing to any non-English-speaking German!

That utter travesty that is Wii just made me realize how fucking brilliant Sony is. PlayStation. Doesn't have the über-nerdy connotations that Xbox does, but neither does it make you sound like a goddamned 6 year-old. Like Wii.

    FFS Nintendo - mongtards.

/is angry that Nintendo have chosen to alienate not the non-games interested girlfriend, nor the non-games interested parents, but rather the pretty FUCKING games interested GAMES-PLAYER, who prefers not to sound like a complete retard when mentioning his new console.

Obviously some do (who doesn't like a reason to bitch and sound smart and witty), but it's a mainly UK English association. Not that I care :-)
Come on Ahab! You're teh Swede, right? You going to tell me that people won't look at you funny/walk away if you ask them "kommer du over og spiller lidt Wii i aften?". Eller "har du fået nogen flere Wii-spil?"

    Thought not... :)

And are you saying that NEITHER your girlfriend, nor the parents will be alienated by this name, ONLY the gamers? Pretentious bastards, they deserve it then.
See my other post. Anyway, t'was more a comment on the fact that, in their search to find a name that is strange and zen-like, they've made sure that EVERYBODY is going to sound liek an idiot when they mention it. And I'm really, really hoping that the Revolution will make my girlf interested in games...

The point still stands, tho - you just. can't. mention that name in public. In any language. Its retarded.

    From the front page:

But Kaplan says Nintendo plans to stand firm - even in the face of petitions and the like - and plays the old 'no such thing as bad publicity' card: "Let me just tell you that if you're disrupted by it today, it's obviously caught your attention. And at the show, you're going to get to try out a lot of products that will make you happy."
    [/code]

FFS now using a really stupid name is disrupting. Jaysus Iwata has a lot to answer for. Disrupt me bollix. Make a gigantic fuck up more like. Idiots.

Perhaps the most bizarre statement since the announcement.

I don't think anyone is humilitated by this daft naming other than Nintendo.
