Slashdot are running a story hinting (rather strongly) at a $200 launch price for the Wii: http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/05/22/2110250 Assuming the same $=€ as the PS3, we're looking at £136 for the UK, or £139.99 at a more familiar price point. Or, in layman's terms - 1/3 of a PS3. |
Wii launch @ £140?

Registered 20 years agoI didn't see anything about the price in there, however in the linked interview Iwata basically says we won't see a GBA succesor for a long while. :/
Probably a good thing tbh. -

Registered 16 years agoI saw the PS3 Euro and $ prices, and thought we would be getting screwed over, but I don't think that they added the Tax amount onto $599. So it could equally be possible that a $200 Wii is exclusive of Tax.
Still, we pay twice as much Tax here than in the US, so it's still no fair

The NES, SNES, 64, and 'Cube all had a US launch price of $200.

Registered 16 years ago£140 sounds a bit low to me, considering the technology in the controller. But I'd be disappointed if it was above £180...

£250. I know because I paid every penny myself. Then watched in disbelief as they reduced it mere weeks later!
I severely doubt it launched in the US at $200, though. -

Registered 16 years agoThe Wii can't go for £250. It needs to be less the the 360 Core (which will probably have a price cut around release date) if it is to sell.
£140 -£180 would be impulse buy range.
I also hope the games aren't overpriced. Might be a new system but games should be less than £40. -

Registered 16 years ago@mr_steve100 - US prices are always exclusive of sales tax (i.e. VAT), so your average US gamer will pay 6-9% on top, varying from state to state. As far as I know, quoted EU prices *must* include VAT, which goes some way to explaining the higher basic prices.
@plok, @ecureuil - I honestly think that we'll get the Wii at around the £140 mark. The Gamecube was around there (maybe £130?), and the big N is saving so much on CPU/GPU development that they've got to give us some slack

Still think £140 is too low, even if Cube launch at £130ish. Technology in the controllers is going to make them pricey! -

£140/€200 sounds about right for it.

Registered 16 years agoI'd say £180 with one complete controller (wouldn't they be quite expensive with all that motion detection stuff? - and buying an additional one would probably be around £25 as most official joypads seem to be). No game. Instant access to WiiConnect24. Relevant cables. Throw in a few demos, or possible Wii Sports.
Anything under £200 should seem pretty cheap in a console-gamer's eyes. -

Actually, I've heard rumours that the controllers are quite expensive to produce, in comparison to the price of the console. I've read reports of the console being $200, but extra Wiimotes costing anywhere between $70-$100. -

The tilt sensor technology in the controller I imagine would make them more expensive because its not used in many current devices and it means there is more to the controller than a circuit board with a few buttons attached - there is a speaker, possibly a microphone, buttons, connectors, tilt bits, a rumble motor, and wireless technology. -

Exactly. Look at the official Xbox360 wireless controller - that's £32 in the shops. The Wiimote has a few more bits and bobs crammed into it. -
